Scheps to Compete at FINA World Cup
August 07, 2013 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Falcon senior-to-be will participate in event in her native Netherlands
Scheps, a native of Waddinxveen, Netherlands, will compete in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter free and the 200-meter individual medley at the World Cup.
"We are extremely excited for Joëlle, as this is a very fast meet with a lot of Olympians and world-record holders being present," said BGSU head coach Petra Martin. "It has been a great summer for Falcon swimming, with our athletes representing internationally and on the national level as well.
"It has been always our plan to do that and to be competitive on the international stage. We hope to keep that trend going in the future and to translate all this unique experience into another year of fast swimming for the team."
Last season, Scheps was named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team in her first year with the Falcons. She finished third in the 200 free at the MAC Championships, posting a school-record time of 1:48.93 in the finals. She also was a part of BGSU's 400- and 800-meter freestyle relay teams which finished fifth and third, respectively, at the conference meet. In the prelims, she swam the second-fasteset time in school history in the 200 IM.
Scheps earned five regular-season wins in the 200 free during 2012-13, and she represented the Falcons at the U.S. Winter Nationals, competing in both the 200 free and the 200 IM.
Scheps attended Eindhoven Technical University in the Netherlands for two years before coming to BGSU. She holds the Dutch records for 18-year-old women in both the 200 and 400 IM.
