Then, the Brown and Orange will head to the Motor City next Tuesday (Sept. 17) to meet the University of Detroit Mercy. That match will begin at 3:00 p.m. at UDM's Titan Field.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons dropped a narrow decision for the third consecutive match. Taylor Heidorn's goal midway through the first half proved to be the winner as IUPUI downed BGSU, 1-0, in Indianapolis. Redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel had 10 saves in goal for the Brown and Orange.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 0-3-0 on the young season, having dropped all three matches by one goal apiece. Head coach Lindsay Basalyga and her staff returned 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a year ago. The 2012 club finished with an overall record of 1-17-1 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 0-10-1. Ten of the Falcons' losses last fall, including six in conference play, came by a single goal.
BGSU's matches this year to date have come against Cleveland State (Aug. 25) and IUPUI (Sept. 8) on the road, and Butler at home (Aug. 31). The BU match required overtime.
Junior Ashley Garr and freshman Haley Malaczewski have scored the Falcons' goals, and are tied for the team scoring lead with two points each. Malaczewski came off the bench to score her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate match, at CSU. Garr scored the first goal of her BGSU career vs. Butler.
Seniors Alyssa Carmack and Madeline Wideman each have an assist on the young season, as Carmack played a through ball to Malaczewski for her goal at CSU, while Garr converted a Wideman corner kick vs. BU.
In goal, redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel has played all 278-plus minutes to date. She has 28 saves, a saves percentage of .848 and a goals-against average of 1.62.
BGSU's list of returning starters includes the team's two 2013 co-captains, Carmack and Jenny Fowler. Carmack was one of just two players to start all 19 matches last fall, playing at a center-back position. Fowler, a fifth-year Falcon, made 17 starts in 2012.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Wideman, Ivi Casagrande and Kaitlyn Tobin, redshirt junior Kylie Briem, true juniors Garr, Kaylee Draper and Sidney Huth and sophomores Emma Norris and Haley Parkinson. Huth led the Brown and Orange in scoring with three goals and seven points a year ago, while Wideman had a pair of goals and five total points in '12.
Wideman has a career total of 20 points to lead active Falcons. She also paces all members of the 2013 team with 10 career assists at BGSU. Huth and Wideman are tied for the active career lead with five goals apiece.
Cadel, the lone returnee among the goalkeepers, made her collegiate debut in the Cleveland State match. She sat out the 2012 season as a redshirt. The goalkeeping corps also includes true freshman Michelle Denley and Jenna DiTusa.
Cadel is one of four returning Falcons on the 2013 roster who did not see action last fall. Fourth-year Falcon Kailey Paszko and redshirt freshmen Courtney Hendrix and Lexie Schmidt all missed the 2012 campaign due to injury.
Denley and DiTusa are two of the nine true freshmen on the roster this season. That list also includes Malaczewski, Paige Amodio, Taylor Bucaro, Sabrina Cisneros, Jessica Creech, Taylor Dackin and Melissa Needham.
CADEL, FALCONS AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cadel leads the MAC, and ranks seventh in the nation, in saves per game. Cadel has 28 saves in three contests, an average of 9.33 per game to date.
As a team, BGSU is tied for fifth nationally with 9.67 saves per game. That total includes one 'team save' on an opponent shot blocked by a Falcon defender on the goal line.
FASCINATING FALCON FACTS
• BGSU has taken a total of 22 shots this season to date, with 17 of those shots – 77.3% – on goal. By contrast, the opposition has put only 44.7% of their shots on target through the first three matches.
• Six Falcons made their respective collegiate debuts in the CSU match, and one more did so against Butler. No fewer than five freshmen were in the starting lineup in Cleveland. That group included redshirt freshmen Lauren Cadel and Courtney Hendrix and true frosh Paige Amodio, Sabrina Cisneros and Jessica Creech. Cadel, Amodio and Creech each played all 90 minutes of the match. Haley Malaczewski came off the bench against the Vikings, and scored BGSU's goal.
• Against Butler, Taylor Bucaro made her collegiate debut. She played 12 minutes vs. the Bulldogs, and hit the crossbar on her first shot attempt as a Falcon.
• Redshirt junior Kylie Briem made her 2013 debut against the Bulldogs. Briem, who saw 38 minutes of action in the match, was making her first appearance since suffering an injury in last season's Akron contest (Oct. 14, 2012) and missing the remainder of the year.
• Falcon goalkeepers have posted double-digit save totals in five of the last six matches, dating to last season. BGSU had 10 or more saves in each of the last three 2012 games, and redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel had 12 stops vs. Butler and 10 more at IUPUI this fall.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Michigan State will enter Friday's match with a record of 4-0-2, including a 2-0-2 mark at home. The Spartans' wins have come over Buffalo, Milwaukee, Dayton and New Mexico, and MSU has played to 1-1 draws with San Diego State and Oakland. Allyson Krause leads the team with five points, including a pair of goals. She is tied with Jessica White for the MSU lead in the latter category. In goal, Courtney Clem has started all six matches, and has 23 saves and a goals-against average of 0.87. Head coach Tom Saxton welcomed back seven starters from a 2012 team that went 8-9-2 overall and 2-8-1 in the Big Ten Conference.
A LOOK AT THE TITANS
Detroit has a 2-3-1 record on the year. The Titans play at Michigan Thursday before opening their home schedule vs. BGSU five days later. UDM has defeated San Francisco and Canisius, lost to Eastern Michigan, California and Notre Dame and tied Central Michigan. Three different Titans (Anna Mindling, Kaitlyn Quarrell and Haley Burtraw) have scored two goals apiece, with each of the three recording a two-goal game. Martha Dunbar has 37 saves in goal, and a 1.95 GAA. Coach Mike Lupenec returned 15 letterwinners, including six starters, from a year ago. The Titans went 9-7-1 overall and 5-2-0 in Horizon League play in 2012, tying for the league regular-season title.
THE SERIES
The Falcons have faced Michigan State more than any other non-conference opponent. The teams have played a regular-season game every year since 1997, the first season BGSU fielded a program, and the schools also met in the NCAA Championships in 2005. MSU holds a 14-1-2 advantage in the series, including a 4-0 win in Bowling Green last fall (Aug. 17, 2012) and a 2-0 triumph in East Lansing the previous year (Sept. 9, 2011).
BGSU trails Detroit, 5-3-0, in that series, and the Titans won the most recent meeting, a 3-0 game in BG two years ago (Aug. 28, 2011). The Falcons had posted 4-0 victories in each of the previous two matchups, including in the team's last trip to Detroit four seasons ago (Sept. 4, 2009). The BGSU-UDM series certainly has not been marked by closely-played matches. None of the eight meetings has ever been decided by fewer than two goals, and each of the last seven contests has been at least a three-goal victory for the Falcons or Titans.
Series information and match-by-match results for all of BGSU's opponents can be found on pages 40-42 of the BGSU Women's Soccer Media Guide, which is available on the web here at BGSUFalcons.com.
UP NEXT FOR THE FALCONS
Following the Detroit match, the Falcons return home for the only September match at Cochrane Field. BGSU will close the non-conference schedule by hosting Evansville on Sunday, Sept. 22. The Falcons also will offer a free youth clinic for boys and girls from ages 3-14 after the match.
