With the victory, the Spartans remain undefeated with a 5-0-2 overall record. The Falcons drop to 0-4-0 on the year.
"I'm really proud of our defensive discipline throughout the entire game, even after giving up goals," said BGSU head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We showed a lot of glimpses of who we can be in the attack against a very good team, and Tobin scored a great goal in the run of play."
MSU outshot the Falcons by a 28-1 count, and the hosts took the lead in the 15th minute when Erica Goodenough scored from close range.
The home team would fire the first 13 shots of the day, but the Falcons made their lone chance count. Late in the opening period, Tobin broke loose down the right side of the field after taking a pass from fellow senior Madeline Wideman. Tobin beat MSU goalkeeper Gabrielle Gauruder to tie the game at 1-1 with just 2:20 left before halftime.
Tobin's goal was the Falcons' first against Michigan State in six years. The teams battled to a 1-1, double-overtime tie in East Lansing on Sept. 21, 2007, before the Spartans posted shutout victories in each of the next five seasons. Gina Rossi scored BG's goal on that 2007 afternoon.
On Friday, the Spartans took the lead for good in the 61st minute, when a long cross off the foot of Rachel VanPoppelen found Jessica White at the far post. White redirected the ball into the net at the 60:37 mark.
Just over seven minutes later, MSU got some insurance on an own goal, as a corner kick deflected off of a BGSU player and into the net.
Gauruder did not make a save on the day. At the other end of the pitch, BGSU redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel made six stops in her complete-match effort, and the Falcons also were credited with a 'team save' in the match.
"For 90 minutes, we focused on what 'we celebrate' and we forced Michigan State to find a way to beat us instead of us beating ourselves," said Basalyga. "I'm really looking forward to our next opportunity to compete."
BGSU returns to the state of Michigan on Tuesday (Sept. 17), heading to the Motor City for a match against the University of Detroit Mercy. That contest will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Titan Field.
