Ohio Women's Soccer | Kent State Women's Soccer
Then, on Sunday (Sept. 29), BGSU will venture to Northeast Ohio to face Kent State University. Sunday's match begins at 1:00 p.m. at Zoeller Field.
MAC DEBUTS
Friday's match at Ohio marks the Mid-American Conference debut not only for Falcon head coach Lindsay Basalyga, but for the coach on the other bench as well. Basalyga is in her first year at BGSU after eight years as the head coach at Eastern Kentucky University. Ohio head coach Aaron Rodgers is in his first season as a collegiate head coach. He spent the previous four years as an assistant at the University of Kentucky.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 0-6-0 on the young season, having dropped four of those six matches by one goal apiece. Basalyga and her staff returned 11 letterwinners, including eight starters, from a year ago. The 2012 club finished with an overall record of 1-17-1 and a Mid-American Conference mark of 0-10-1. Ten of the Falcons' losses last fall, including six in conference play, came by a single goal.
Four of BGSU's first six matches this year have come on the road, against Cleveland State (Aug. 25), IUPUI (Sept. 8), Michigan State (Sept. 13) and Detroit (Sept. 17). BG's two home matches both were 2-1 overtime setbacks, vs. Butler (Aug. 31) and Evansville (Sept. 22).
Senior Madeline Wideman leads the Falcons in scoring, with four points on the young season. Wideman is one of four players with a goal, joining fellow senior Kaitlyn Tobin, junior Ashley Garr and freshman Haley Malaczewski on that list. Malaczewski came off the bench to score her first collegiate goal in her first collegiate match, at CSU. Garr scored the first goal of her BGSU career vs. Butler, while Tobin found the back of the net at Michigan State.
Wideman's goal came after a long individual run in the first half against Evansville on Sunday. She also has a team-leading two assists on the season, while classmate Alyssa Carmack has one assist this fall.
In goal, redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel has played all 549-plus minutes to date. She has 52 saves, a saves percentage of .800 and a goals-against average of 2.13.
BGSU's list of returning starters includes the team's two 2013 co-captains, Carmack and Jenny Fowler. Carmack was one of just two players to start all 19 matches last fall, playing at a center-back position. Fowler, a fifth-year Falcon, made 17 starts in 2012.
Other returning letterwinners include seniors Tobin, Wideman and Ivi Casagrande, redshirt junior Kylie Briem, true juniors Garr, Kaylee Draper and Sidney Huth and sophomores Emma Norris and Haley Parkinson. Huth led the Brown and Orange in scoring with three goals and seven points a year ago, while Wideman had a pair of goals and five total points in '12.
Cadel, the lone returnee among the goalkeepers, is in her first playing season with the Falcons, having sat out the 2012 season as a redshirt. The goalkeeping corps also includes true freshmen Michelle Denley and Jenna DiTusa.
Cadel is one of three Falcons on the current roster who did not see action last fall. Fourth-year Falcon Kailey Paszko and redshirt freshman Lexie Schmidt both missed the 2012 campaign due to injury.
Denley and DiTusa are two of the nine true freshmen on the roster this season. That list also includes Malaczewski, Paige Amodio, Taylor Bucaro, Sabrina Cisneros, Jessica Creech, Taylor Dackin and Melissa Needham.
CADEL, FALCONS AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cadel leads the MAC, and ranks among the top 10 in the nation, in saves per game. Cadel has 52 saves in six contests, an average of 8.67 per game. She ranks eighth in NCAA Division I in that category. Cadel also leads the MAC, and ranks 29th nationally, in total saves.
As a team, BGSU is 10th in the country in saves per game.
FAST FALCON FACTS
• Senior Madeline Wideman's goal vs. Evansville gives her career totals of six goals and 23 points. She leads all active Falcons in both categories, and also paces all members of the 2013 team in career assists, with 11 in her career. With four points this season, Wideman is just one shy of matching her total for all of last year.
• The Falcons have scored four goals this season, including two at home and two on the road. Last year, BGSU had a total of just nine goals in 19 matches, including only three goals in road matches.
• The 2013 Falcons have scored three first-half goals, after scoring a total of four goals in the opening half during all of last year.
• Redshirt freshman Lauren Cadel made 10 saves – several of the spectacular variety – in the Evansville match. Cadel has made a total of 52 saves in the Falcons' six matches to date, with at least six stops in every game.
• Falcon goalkeepers have posted double-digit save totals in six of the last nine matches, dating to last season. BGSU had 10 or more saves in each of the last three 2012 games, and Cadel had 12 stops vs. Butler and 10 saves against both IUPUI and Evansville this fall.
• After the Evansville match, the Falcons now have an all-time record of 19-22-32 in overtime contests. BGSU has a 10-16-14 mark in OT matches at Cochrane Field, a 7-4-16 ledger in road games and a 2-2-2 slate in neutral-site OT games.
• The Falcons have scored just one goal in seven road matches vs. Friday's opponent, Ohio, over the years. But, BGSU has scored a total of eight goals at the Bobcats' Chessa Field. BG's first trip to the MAC Tournament's semifinal round took the Brown and Orange to Athens in 1998, where top-seeded Northern Illinois downed the Falcons by a 2-1 count. Six years later, BGSU rolled to the MAC Tournament championship, with the last two games coming at Chessa Field. The Falcons drubbed Western Michigan, 4-1, in the 2004 semifinals before posting a 2-0 win over Central Michigan in the league tourney title match.
• While BGSU has scored just one goal on the road against Ohio, the Falcons have allowed only one goal vs. Kent State in nearly a decade. Jaclyn Dutton's 'Golden Goal' vs. BG in 2011 was the Flashes' first goal against the Falcons since 2004, and snapped an eight-match series unbeaten streak for the Brown and Orange. That goal also ended a Falcon series shutout string of 841:06. Entering the 2013 match, Dutton's goal is the lone KSU goal vs. BGSU in the teams' last 951:06 of play.
SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Ohio has an overall record of 4-2-2 heading into Friday's MAC opener with the Falcons, and the Bobcats will take a five-match unbeaten streak into that contest. The 'Cats played host Cleveland State to a scoreless draw on the road on Friday (Sept. 20), after winning the previous four matches. Ohio is 1-2-1 at home and 3-0-1 on the road this year to date. The home losses came to a pair of strong teams in Indiana and DePaul, while the Bobcats have topped Morehead State and tied Wright State at Chessa Field. Ohio was picked to finish third in the East Division in the MAC's preseason coaches poll. Individually, Maggie Murnane leads the team in scoring, with three goals and seven points. Seven other players have scored at least one goal, while Tonya Frasik paces the Bobcats with four assists. In goal, Mattie Liston has played the bulk of the minutes, and has two shutouts and a goals-against average of just 0.86. Head coach Aaron Rodgers, in his first year in Athens, inherited 14 letterwinners, including seven starters, from a year ago. The 2012 edition of the Bobcats went 8-10-1 overall and 3-6-1 in MAC play.
A LOOK AT THE GOLDEN FLASHES
Kent State has an overall record of 5-3-0 heading into the MAC opener. The Golden Flashes host Central Michigan on Friday (Sept. 27) before facing the Falcons two days later. KSU is a perfect 4-0-0 at home, and the Flashes are 1-2-0 on the road and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches. The home wins have come against St. Bonaventure, Cleveland State, Valparaiso and Youngstown State, and KSU posted shutouts in each of the latter three home matches. The Flashes were picked to place second in the MAC's East Division in the preseason coaches poll. Jessacca Gironda leads the team with eight points, and is tied with Jenna Hellstrom for the goal-scoring lead, with three apiece. Stephanie Haugh has a KSU-best three assists to date. In goal, Stephanie Senn has played all but 45 minutes, and has three shutouts, 33 saves and a GAA of 1.04. Rob Marinaro, in his 13th season as the KSU head coach, guided the Flashes to a 13-5-2 overall mark and a 7-3-1 MAC ledger a year ago.
THE SERIES
The Falcons trail Ohio, 10-2-4, in the all-time series between the teams, and the Bobcats have won the last two meetings. Last season, Ohio scored early in the second half for a 1-0 win at Cochrane Field (Sept. 21, 2012). The 'Cats picked up a 2-0 victory in the Falcons' last trip to Athens, two years ago (Oct. 16, 2011), which snapped BG's four-match series unbeaten streak. That streak featured four-straight double-overtime matches, with BG winning the 2007 meeting in the second OT, and the Falcons and Bobcats playing to a draw in 2008, '09 and '10. BG is 2-5-2 in home matches and 0-5-2 in road games vs. Ohio over the years.
BGSU leads Kent State, 10-4-5, in that series. The teams battled to a scoreless draw in last year's game at Cochrane (Sept. 23, 2012), in the 10th overtime match in 19 series meetings. KSU picked up a 1-0 OT win in Kent two years ago (Sept. 25, 2011), with that 'Golden Goal' ending an eight-match series unbeaten streak for BGSU, and marking the Flashes' lone goal against the Falcons since 2004. BGSU posted shutouts vs. KSU in seven consecutive meetings from 2005-10, with a shutout streak of 841:06 vs. the Flashes during that span. The Falcons are 5-1-5 at home and 5-3-0 on the road vs. Kent State through the years.
