NORMAL, Ill – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team made a strong statement to start the 2013-14 season after firing a 36-hole score of 595 (293-302), on day one of the Redbird Invitational to sit in second-place with 18 holes remaining.
Eighth year head coach Stephanie Young saw her lineup of Lily Bartell (69-71), Hannah Lewis (75-75), Patricia Holt (74-79), Shelby Wilson(75-79), and Mikayla Baer (79-79) all shoot in the 70's or better  in each of their two rounds on Sunday (Sept. 8).
Playing at Weibring Golf Club, BGSU came out swinging early in the first round finishing with a team score of 293, which set a mark for the best 18-hole team score in Falcons history, beating the previous-best by one stroke (294).
Bartell, who is in her second year at BGSU, played a big part of the Falcons success on the first day. Bartell fired a career-low 69 in her first 18 holes of action, beating her previous career-low by two strokes (71). With firing a 3-under 69, Bartell tied the lowest 18-hole round in Falcons history. Â
In fact, Bartell fired a total score of 4-under 140 (69-71), tying the best individual score (36 holes) set by Susy Grunden in 2010-11. Â
Starting on the third hole (shotgun start), Bartell started the round making three consecutive pars before making a birdie on the par 5 sixth hole. Bartell went on to par five holes in-a-row before making birdie on the par-4 12th , putting her at 2-under through 10 holes. After making a bogey on the 14th, Bartell finished the first round by making birdie on two of her final three holes for a 3-under 69. Â
Bartell seemed to find her comfort zone on the back nine, firing a 2-under 34 on the second 18. For the day, Bartell shot a combined 3-under (35-34) on the back nine, playing a huge part of her day's success.
Lewis, who also is in her second year at BGSU, shot a career-best 36-hole mark of 150 (75-75). Lewis shot a career-low 75, twice, beating her previous-best of 76 set a year ago.
Starting on the fourth hole, Lewis found her swing on the back nine making birdie on the par-4 12th. Lewis went on to par four of the next five holes before making another birdie on the par 5 18th, before making two straight par's for a first round 3-over 75.
Carrying her momentum into the second round, Lewis pared the first seven holes before making a birdie on the par-3 11th. Lewis finished strong by making par on her final four holes, finishing her at 6-over on the day.
While Bartell and Lewis both set career marks on the first day in Normal, Ill., junior Patricia Holt quietly put together a strong showing for the Falcons as well.
Holt, who was the lone junior for the Orange and Brown, tied her career-low with a 2-over 74 in the first round.
Holt started on the fifth hole and made nine pars over her first 12 holes before making a birdie on the par-3 17th. Holt followed it with another birdie on the par-3 fourth.
Overall, Holt made 12 pars, two birdies and four bogeys on the round. Holt fired a 5-over 77 in her second round, carding two birdies.
Bailey Arnold, who won the Redbird Invitational in 2011, played as an individual for the day. Arnold fired an 8-over 152 (78-74), and currently sits in 23rd place overall for the tournament. Â
Fellow Mid-American Conference member and arch-rival, Toledo, who is the defending their title from a year ago, leads the tournament by three shots with a 36-hole score of 592 (297-295).Three of the five MAC teams that are competing are sitting in third-place or better, while host Illinois State University sitting in fifth-place with a score of 26-over 602 (297-305). Â
The third and final round will begin on Monday morning (Sept. 9) with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m.
