Ann Arbor, Mich. – Sophomore Tiera Parker set a personal best to win the triple jump and added a career best in the 60 as the Bowling Green indoor track and field team competed at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational Saturday, hosted by the University of Michigan.
No team scores were kept for the meet, but the Falcons won one event and placed second in two others against Michigan, Notre Dame, Detroit, Siena Heights and Concordia (Mich.). There were also numerous unattached and club runners competing at the meet.
Parker's leap of 37-feet-10 in the triple jump was almost a full 10 inches longer than her previous career best and was enough to beat Notre Dame's Kelly Burke by more than a foot. It is the best triple jump performance by a Falcon since Erica Wilson went 38-6 in 2007.
Parker also set a personal best in the 60, but she was just one of a trio of Falcons that ran well in that event. Jeanette Pettigrew, Alicia Arnold and Parker all qualified for finals with strong prelims and the three finished second, third and fourth in finals. Pettigrew was second in 7.63 seconds and Arnold was third at 7.72. Parker inched her personal best forward with a time of 7.83.
Senior transfer Tina Perrine continued her solid work in the weight throw, finishing second with a toss of 55-1. Sophomore transfer Alicia Arnold finished fourth in the long jump but had a season-best leap of 18-6. The 1600 relay team of Pettigrew, Demetra Taylor, Taylor Rambo and Brittany Sinclair placed third in 3:54.21, more than five seconds faster than the program's season-best this year.
In other solid efforts, freshman Makenzie Wheat placed third in the shot put at 43-10 and Raven Porter was fourth in the triple jump at 35-5.75.
Bowling Green will host its second and final home indoor meet of the season Friday night for the Tom Wright Open beginning at 5 p.m.
