Terre Haute, Ind. – The BGSU women's cross country team placed seventh overall out of 33 teams, and first out of five Mid-American Conference schools, at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Falcons finished in front of Central Michigan, Kent State, Ohio and Akron from the MAC. The men's squad placed 27th out of 28 teams in their 8k race.
In the women's race, junior Becca Rae finished 24th out of 214 runners with a 6,000-meter time of 22:15.8. Rae improved 73 places from last year where she finished 97th overall at the 2013 Pre-Nationals meet.
"Becca took a nice step today running almost 30 seconds faster then last year with very challenging course conditions," Head Coach Lou Snelling said. "It was pretty slow out there. Team wise we accomplished a lot of our goals for the meet, but realistically missed the opportunity to be top three. In two weeks we have an opportunity, but will have to come together as a team to make it happen."
Redshirt sophomore Mackenzie McMillin followed in 44th place with a new personal best time of 22:43.8.
"Individually the race did not go exactly as I would have hoped, but for the conditions and for our first 6k of the season, it was a solid day," McMillin said. "The team came together well once again and beat every MAC school in our race, so that is a definite positive and builds our confidence going into the MAC meet in two weeks."
Brent Darah (65th), Amanda Garlak (66th) and Allison Francis (70th) all finished within four seconds of each other. In her first 6k with the Falcons, freshman Elena Lancioni ran a time of 23:18.8.
Last season, the women finished 16th out of 35 teams.
The men were led by freshman Kohl Taberner with a time of 26:43.8. This was his second race finishing first for the Falcons. Rounding out the top five for BGSU was Travis Jex, Greg Black, Nathan Kuck and Jeremy Richard.
This was the last race for both teams before they travel to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan for MAC Championships November 1. The race will be held at Riverwood Golf Course.
