Mt. Pleasant, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University cross country teams raced at MAC Championships Nov. 1. Becca Rae and Kohl Taberner led the way for the Falcons in their respective races.
The women placed fourth overall and scored 127 points, which is the team's best finish and point total since the 2006 season. This is also BG's first back-to-back top half performance at MACs since 1997-98.
"This is the most experienced group that I've brought to MAC Championships," said Head Coach Lou Snelling. "We saw potential in terms of this whole group is back next year, so we saw a lot of good things today."
Snelling has improved his team's finishing place each season since arriving at Bowling Green. Prior to this season, the team finished 12th in 2011, 8th in 2012 and 6th in 2013.
Rae put together a 13th place, Second Team All-MAC performance, despite cold race conditions. She set a personal best time of 21:13. She broke her previous personal best time of 22:01, which she set at last season's MAC Championship meet.
"I was really happy with it," Rae said. "After all the work we've done leading up to this, I was happy to get that payoff at the end of the season."
The Falcons' second through sixth runners were separated by just a five second spread. Every member of BG's top seven set new personal records.
Allison Francis saw the biggest improvement, crushing her previous personal best by 1:20. Elena Lancioni shattered her old time by 1:13 and Mackenzie McMillin beat hers by just under one minute. Brent Darah set a new personal record of 21:43, which is a 40 second improvement for him. Maria Meredith set a personal best time for the second meet in a row. Andrea Alt, Jasmine Redman and Amanda Garlak all PR'd by under five seconds.
On the men's side, Taberner finished 46th overall. His 25:53 was a personal record by 37 seconds.
"He's done a tremendous job all season," Assistant Coach Eric Thatcher said. "He put himself into the position to have the type of race that he did today and that should give him confidence that the work he is putting in is continuing to pay off."
The Falcons also saw a significant time improvement from last season's MAC Championships. BGSU's overall average was 26:34 this year, which is 27 seconds faster than in 2013. Six out of eight BG runners, who all happen to be freshmen or redshirt freshmen, set new personal best individual times.
"We're excited for the group as a whole to feel like they're leaving here with some validation for the hard work they have put in," Thatcher said. "We are excited about some of the individual development we have seen, knowing that our team still has to come together."
Freshmen Travis Jex and Nathan Kuck set personal records by over 40 seconds. Nick Voth and Tyler Spiewak improved by 19 and 14 seconds, respectively. Landon Brown had the biggest jump on the men' side, racing 1:01 faster than his previous best time.
Both teams travel to Wisconsin in two weeks for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Meet Nov. 14.
