October 23, 2014 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team has announced that Brian Bien, Jason Link, and Kory Brown will serve as tri-captains for the 2015 season. Captains were elected during a team meeting earlier this fall.
"The leadership is very important this year with having 15 first-year guys," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "Brian Bien, Jason Link, and Kory Brown will play a major role in our program this year. We have all three of our captains right up the middle with Jason on the mound, Brian at short, and Kory in the outfield."
Bien, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, was named first team All-Mid-American Conference last season at shortstop. A three-year starter for the Falcons, Bien led the team with a .351 batting average in 2014. Bien started all 52 games at shortstop for the Orange and Brown a season ago, reaching base safely in 46 of the 52. Bien batted .371 in MAC play, and made just four errors in 27 conference games for a fielding percentage of .973. A graduate of Roger Bacon High School, Bien finished second in school history for a single season with 16 sacrifices on the year. He finished his junior year fourth all-time for career assists with 445, after recording 167 in 2014.
PERSONAL: Full name is Brian Michael Bien...son of Terry and Irene Bien...born on September 2, 1992...has two brothers...brother, Tyler, played collegiate baseball at Mount St. Joseph...plans to major in sport management.
SCHMITZ QUOTE: "Brian Bien was a first team All-MAC shortstop last year and our leading hitter. He does a great job defensively, as well. He does a great job through his actions on the field and we are excited he was elected as a captain."
BIEN QUOTE: "To be chosen as a captain by my teammates and coaches really means a lot to me. I am very humbled and honored to lead this great group of guys. There are so many guys on the team deserving of this title, so I am extremely grateful for this. We have a very young team this year after losing so many seniors, but Jason, Kory and I are excited to take on this challenge. I cannot thank my teammates enough for voting me as captain, and I look forward to all the responsibilities that come along with it."
Link, a senior from Hamilton, Ohio, finished 2014 with a 1.70 earned run average – fourth-best in school history for a single season. He compiled a 1-1 record in 37.0 innings pitched, making 17 total appearances for the Falcons. Link did not allow more than two earned runs in any of his 17 appearances, and only allowed an earned run in five of his outings. A graduate of Hamilton High School, Link made his only start of the season on March 12 versus Evansville, pitching four innings to pick up the win. He struck out a season-best five batters in two separate long-relief outings.
PERSONAL: Full name is Jason Michael Link...son of Stan Link and Robin Michael...was born on November 7, 1992...has one older sister...is majoring in sport management.
SCHMITZ QUOTE: "Jason Link has probably been our most consistent relief pitcher and spot starter over the past few years. He has great work habits like Brian, and will be a mainstay on the pitching staff this year. We were looking for somebody to help lead the pitching staff, and Jason fills that role."
LINK QUOTE: "I feel very honored that my teammates and coaches view me as a leader and captain. Being a captain comes with a lot of responsibility and I am going to do my best to fulfill that role on and off the field. I think that this group of captains, along with several other experienced leaders, can take this team very far this season and have a great year"
