Cole, Lambert & Santoro to join BGSU in 2015-16 academic year
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Jennifer Roos has announced the signing of three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Maddie Cole (Sylvania, Ohio), Sydney Lambert (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Carly Santoro (Bellevue, Ohio) will join the Falcon program for the 2015-16 academic year.
"Every year, the second Wednesday in November is always an exciting time for our program as we are able to officially introduce the newest Falcons," said Roos. "We know Maddie, Sydney and Carly each will be a great asset to our community, university and program.
"All three are very intelligent student-athletes on and off the court, and have earned the opportunity to play Division-I collegiate basketball. I am looking forward to watching them work together as a class, once they arrive on campus in the summer of 2015. Our coaching staff has worked diligently during the recruiting process and I greatly appreciate their efforts in finalizing the BGSU Class of 2019."
Cole, a 6-0 forward, is currently in her senior year at Sylvania Northview High School, under coach Brittaney Cymbolin. Cole averaged 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds as a junior, helping the Ladykats to an 18-6 overall record and a trip to the district semifinals. She was named to the All-Northern Lakes League First Team last season, and also earned All-Northwest District third-team honors. Additionally, she was rated among the top 10 power forwards in the state of Ohio by Ohio Girls Basketball Report (OGBR). Cole earned all-district honorable mention as a sophomore after averaging 6.3 points and 6.4 rebounds and helping Northview to a district runner-up finish.
"Maddie was the first commitment in this class," said Roos. "She has the ability to score inside with her back to the basket as well as extend the defense and score from the perimeter. Also, she can rebound well at both ends of the court. She has received great coaching from Jerry Sigler and Brittaney Cymbolin at Northview, along with AAU Head Coach Duffy Burns with the Toledo Elite organization."
Lambert, a 5-8 guard, is in her senior year at McAuley H.S. under coach Dan Wallace. She averaged 13.2 points and 3.2 assists per game last year, helping the Mohawks to a 16-8 record and a trip to the district finals. Lambert, a first-team All-Girls' Greater Catholic League selection, was an honorable mention All-Southwest District choice as a junior. Lambert also earned all-conference and all-district first-team honors as a sophomore. She has been an All-GGCL selection in track in each of her first three seasons, advancing to regionals as both a sophomore and a junior.
"Sydney is the type of guard who will be able to use her speed to help us push tempo up the floor offensively and can contain opponents' guards defensively," said Roos. "I have no doubt that she will continue to work hard, and she will be a consistent scoring threat for us offensively beyond the three-point line. In addition to the coaching she has received at McAuley, she has learned a tremendous amount from her AAU Head Coach Carlton Gray with the Cincinnati Finest AAU organization."
Santoro, a 5-10 guard, is a senior at Bellevue H.S. where she is coached by her father, Kory Santoro. A prolific scorer during her first three years with the Lady Red, she was an All-Ohio Second-Team selection last season after earning all-state third-team honors the prior year. She has earned All-Northern Ohio League and All-District First-Team honors in all three seasons to date, and was rated the second-best wing/shooter in the state of Ohio by OGBR. Santoro averaged 22.3 ppg as a junior, and set the school's single-season scoring record with 601 total points. That topped her own record, set during her sophomore season, when she scored 562 points, an average of 25.5 ppg. Santoro averaged 19.1 ppg as a freshman. The team has won the NOL title in each of her first three seasons, and has posted a record of 60-14 record in that time, including a school-record 22 wins last year. Santoro also has played softball and tennis in her high school career, and is a two-time All-Ohio honoree in softball.
"Carly has an uncanny ability to score in a variety of ways," said Roos. "She will be able to extend defenses for us with her shooting ability. In addition, she will bring a strong work ethic with her to our program. Her game has developed throughout her high-school career and with her AAU basketball organization, SMAC, located outside of Cleveland, under Head Coach Andre Gault."
The Falcons have 12 student-athletes, including two seniors – Deborah Hoekstra and Jasmine Matthews – on the 2014-15 roster. BGSU opens the '14-15 regular season on Friday night (Nov. 14), hosting Bucknell University. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
