Carrillo Wins 100 Breaststroke As Falcon Duo Competes At Mexican Nationals

Queretaro, Mexico – Bowling Green State University junior Daniela Carrillo won the 100 breaststroke at the Mexican Short Course National Championships Saturday, coming up just shy of the national record. Both Carrillo and freshman Estela Davis put together strong performances over the course of the past three days at the event.

"I'm proud of both of them," BGSU Swimming & Diving coach Petra Martin said. "They represented our program well. The meet was challenging as it took place in high altitude so getting enough air was very hard. Normally, you need at least a couple of days for the body to adjust but they did not have that luxury. On top of that, they swam the meet coming from heavy training so I'm happy with their performances and the way they raced."

Carrillo swam the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.69, just a bit behind the national record of 1:09.36. Previously, Davis had won the 50 backstroke, the 100 backstroke and the 200 backstroke. Earlier in the week, Carrillo had tied the national record in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 32.02 seconds and won the 200 breaststroke.

As a team, BGSU has almost a month before diving back into dual meet action. The Falcons will host Marshall and Michigan State on Jan. 16 at 6 pm. The team is currently 3-0 on the season, including a record of 2-0 in MAC dual meets.
