GVSU Big Meet Day One Results
Allendale, Mich. – Brooke Pleger inserted herself into the national championship picture in the weight throw and the Bowling Green State University track and field team flourished on day one of the GVSU Big Meet Friday.
Brittany Sinclair and Jasmine Redman surpassed Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying marks in the 400 and 5000, respectively, to lead a charge of Falcons who set new personal bests in the team's final meet before the MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Falcons now have hit automatic marks in 10 events this year after doing so just once a year ago.
Entering the day, Pleger had a career-best throw of 61-feet-10.25 in the weight throw. However, she broke BGSU's school record of 63-9.75 on her second throw, going 64-5.25. But on her sixth and final attempt of the day, Pleger launched the weight 67-10.25. Entering the weekend, only 12 student-athletes in the country have thrown further this year.
But even before Pleger's heroics, Redman set the tone for the day. She set a personal best in the 5000 by more than 22 seconds, completing the race in 17:26.08 to exceed the MAC automatic qualifying mark by more than seven seconds.
Sinclair, who placed sixth at the MAC Championships a year ago, followed Redman by posting a new career-best in the 400, running a 56.53 to surpass the MAC automatic qualifying mark for the first time in her career.
Freshman Rachel Durbin continued to prove that she will be a threat at the MAC Championships in the mile, running a time of 4:55.78, just over a second behind her career best. Sophomore Andrea Alt and freshman Becca Rae both added personal bests in the 3000. Alt ran 10:04.17, eight seconds better than her previous record, and Rae finished in 10:15.51, 11 seconds faster than her prior best.
In the long jump, freshman Raven Porter set a new personal best and senior Dana Gates had a season-best. Porter leaped 17-9, which is almost five inches further than she jumped at the Simmons-Harvey Invite, her previous best. Gates went 17-6.25, four inches ahead of the distance she had at the Simmons-Harvey Invite.
Bowling Green will be back in action Saturday at the GVSU Big Meet for open competition.
