OXFORD, Miss --Â The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to the University of Mississippi on Friday night (Feb. 21), by a score of 2-0, in the Falcons (2-7-1) second game of their doubleheader at the Red and Blue Classic. Earlier in the day, the Orange and Brown defeated Northern Colorado 6-2.
Three freshmen combined for three of the Falcons' four hits in the game as Trista Mokienko (1-for-3), Chelsea Raker (1-for-2), and Haley Schrock (1-for-3) all totaled hits in the game. Senior Katie Yoho added a double and finished 1-for-3 on the night.
Yoho has now finished with at least one hit in five of the last six games, boosting her batting average to .323 on the year with nine hits and three RBI during the stretch.
In what became a pitchers' duel throughout, Falcons' starting pitcher Jamie Kertes (0-5) was credited with a tough loss, giving up two earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Kertes tossed five consecutive shutout innings to begin the game, and allowed only five hits in those innings.
"The team played hard tonight," head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "The game came down to which team would take advantage of an opportunity."
With the game deadlocked at 0-0, the Orange and Brown had the game's first opportunity to score in the top of the second inning. Freshman Aspen Searle and M. Schrock each reached base to begin the inning. Mokienko, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI earlier in the day, doubled to right center to advance M. Schrock to third base. After freshman Sami Parave walked, Bowling Green had bases loaded with one out, but could not score.
As both teams continued to search for the first run of the game, Kertes pitched out of a key third inning bases loaded jam to keep the game knotted at 0-0. With two outs Ole Miss got two walks and a single to load the bases. However, Kertes got the biggest of her four strikeouts to end the inning. Â
The Rebels finally broke the scoreless drought with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for the victory.
"We continue to grow into a team capable of playing with anyone," Salsburg said.
The Falcons will be back in action tomorrow night, taking on Saint Louis at 6 p.m. CST and Buffalo at 8:15 p.m. in a doubleheader at the Red and Blue Classic at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
