Host Xavier University snapped the Bowling Green State University tennis team's brief two-match winning streak, with a 7-0 victory over the Falcons on Friday night (Feb. 21). The non-conference dual was held at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
With the win, Xavier is now 6-2 on the year, while the Falcons drop to 4-2 in dual-match play.
XU captured the doubles point, as the Musketeers' Danielle Patton and Cristina Di Lorenzo downed senior Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Katie Brozovich, 8-3, at the middle flight. Falcon freshmen Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison dropped a narrow decision at the third flight, falling to XU's Allyson Westling and Andrea Wolf in a tiebreaker.
At the top flight, senior Emily Reuland and sophomore Drew Fillis led their opponents, Alex Brinker and Sydney Liggins, by a 7-6 count, but the match was not finished.
The hosts won all six singles matches. Chiricosta took Brinker to a first-set tiebreaker before succumbing, and Brinker went on to take the second set at the top flight.
The third-flight match saw Brozovich battle Di Lorenzo to a draw through the first two sets, as each player won a 6-3 decision. Di Lorenzo, however, eked out a 10-8 decision in the tiebreaker to take the match.
At the sixth flight, Drayton battled Lizzie Oosterbaan through a pair of closely-contested sets, including a second-set tiebreaker, before Oosterbaan pulled out the win.
The Falcons remain in the Queen City for a Saturday afternoon (Feb. 22) match against the University of Cincinnati. That dual is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. at the Western Tennis & Fitness Club.
