Falcons Face Miami Sunday at the Stroh
February 08, 2014 | Women's Basketball
RedHawks come to town on Lauren Prochaska bobblehead day
Sunday's game is the first half of a Falcon hoops doubleheader, as the BGSU men's basketball team faces Akron in a 6:00 p.m. start at the Stroh. The two games will be treated as a true doubleheader, and the arena will not be cleared between games.
GAME NOTES
Bowling Green | Miami
LP (AND HER BOBBLEHEADED DOPPELGANGER) AT THE STROH
• Among the promotional events surrounding Sunday's Miami contest is a Lauren Prochaska bobblehead giveaway. The first 500 fans through the Stroh Center doors will receive a bobblehead of BGSU's all-time leading scorer. Additionally, Prochaska will be in attendance at the game and will be recognized on the court during one of the first-half media timeouts.
• Also on Saturday, the annual Freddie and Frieda Falcon beheadings will take place at halftime, as the identities of the mascots are revealed. A mascot beheading ceremony will highlight the halftime festivities of the 6:00 p.m. men's basketball game as well.
MIAMI WHAMMY IN 2013
• The Falcons lost a pair of games to Miami last season, falling by a narrow 57-54 count at the Stroh Center (Jan. 24, 2013)), then dropping a 76-61 decision in Oxford one month later (Feb. 23, 2013). A few notes that may seem negative, but actually illustrate the Falcons' dominance over the past decade-plus...
• Miami became the first team to defeat BGSU twice in the same season since Eastern Michigan in the 2004-05 campaign.
• The 15-point margin in the second meeting last season was the Falcons' most lopsided loss to a MAC team in over five years, since a 68-47 setback at Ball State on Jan. 26, 2008.
LAST TIME OUT: SCORCHING SECOND-HALF START SINKS WESTERN
• Leading by two points at the half, the Falcons began the second half on an 18-2 run to race past visiting Western Michigan, 72-50, Wednesday night (Feb. 5) at the Stroh Center.
• All nine BGSU players in uniform scored at least two points and pulled down at least one rebound in the win. BG is now a perfect 9-0 at the Stroh Center this season.
• The Falcons actually trailed, 30-29, late in the opening half after a Jessica Jessing three-pointer, but senior Jillian Halfhill answered with a trey – one of her career-high six triples in the game – to give the Brown and Orange the lead at the intermission. Then, BGSU ran away from the Broncos at the start of the second period.
• Halfhill led three double-digit scorers for the Brown and Orange, scoring a game-high 22 points in Wednesday's win. Fellow senior Alexis Rogers had 16 points, including 14 in the second half, while redshirt sophomore Erica Donovan added 12.
• For the Broncos, Miracle Woods had a double-double, with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. After scoring 12 points in the opening half, though, Woods did not score in the second half until just three seconds remained in the game.
• After shooting 6-of-11 from three-point land in the first half, the Falcons came out on fire in the second period. BG scored on the first four possessions of the period, with three of the four buckets coming from beyond the arc. Rogers, Donovan and Halfhill each connected from long distance, and the Falcons' lead was 43-30 before the half was three minutes old. Western never cut the deficit below double figures the rest of the night.
• For the game, the Falcons were 12-of-26 (46.3%) from three-point range, hitting six triples in each half. BGSU held WMU to just a 2-for-14 success rate from long distance, including an 0-of-6 effort in the second period.
• The Falcons outscored Western by a 40-20 count in the second half. BGSU outrebounded the Broncos, 24-14, after the intermission after trailing in that category in the opening period. For the game, BG had a 41-36 advantage on the glass.
• Halfhill scored 16 points in the first half, and Rogers scored 14 in the second.
LEAD, FOLLOW OR GET OUT OF THE WAY
• Through the first 22 games this season, there have been nine contests (Michigan, Niagara, Old Dominion, Monmouth, UMass, Saint Francis, Kent State, Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois) in which BG never trailed, two more (Ohio State and Akron) in which the Falcons were behind for less than a minute, and a 12th (Milwaukee) that saw BG trail for just over a minute's time.
• This year to date, BGSU has led for 690:29 – 78.0 percent of the time – and trailed for just 144:56 (16.4%). The Falcons and the opponents have been tied for a total of 49:35.
• BGSU has trailed for a total of just 10 minutes and 55 seconds (in 360 minutes of action) in the nine home games. The Falcons had not trailed later than the 12:40 mark of the first half of any game at the Stroh Center until Wednesday night (Feb. 5), when Western Michigan took the lead in the final minute of the opening half. BG retook the lead just 19 seconds later, however, and the Falcons never trailed in the second period.
BATTLE OF THE BOARDS
• The Falcons have enjoyed more than their fair share of success on the glass over the Jennifer Roos head-coaching era. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, BGSU has won the rebounding battle in 46 of 57 games, including in 20 of the 26 MAC contests. Three of the other games saw the teams tie in that category.
• This year, the Falcons have out-rebounded the foes in 19 of the first 22 games, with double-digit margins in seven of those matchups. BG owns a MAC-best rebounding margin of +8.5 this year to date. BGSU has out-boarded nine of 10 MAC opponents so far in '13-14, with a league-best +7.2 rebounding margin in conference play.
THREE-MENDOUS!
In MAC games, the Falcons lead the league in both three-point field-goal percentage and three-point FG pct. defense. BGSU is shooting 37.1 percent from beyond the arc, while allowing opponents to shoot just 23.6% from long range. In fact, the Falcons are second on the MAC in overall FG pct. defense, at 36.8%. So, to summarize, BGSU has a higher success rate from behind the three-point line than the opponents do from anywhere on the court over the last 10 games.
QUICK HITS
• BGSU is 19-3 overall and 9-1 in MAC play, and BGSU has won five consecutive games heading into the Miami contest. The Falcons had won five-straight games and 10 of 11 contests, capturing each of those 10 decisions by double-digit margins, before suffering an 82-79 overtime loss on the road against preseason MAC favorite Central Michigan on Jan. 18. But, BG bounced back with a pair of home victories, downing Eastern Michigan (Jan. 23) and Northern Illinois (Jan. 26), before hitting the road and topping Ohio and Toledo last week.
• The Falcons posted a 78-62 win at Ohio (Jan. 30), and downed UT, 66-59, in the Glass City last weekend (Feb. 2). Then, BG returned home and picked up a 72-50 victory over Western Michigan Wednesday night (Feb. 5). BGSU has had three five-game winning streaks and one four-game streak this season to date.
• Sixteen of the Falcons' 19 victories this season – including all nine home games – have come by double figures. Sunday's win at Toledo marked BGSU's first single-digit win since Nov. 18. BG posted a one-point win at Iona (Nov. 9) in the second game of the year, and downed Butler by four just over a week later (Nov. 18).
• The Falcons have recorded five wins of 22 points or more, with four of those five coming at home. BGSU is 9-0 at the Stroh Center, having won those eight games by an average of 20.8 points per contest.
• In addition to the nine home wins, the Falcons have 10 victories away from home, with marks of 7-2 on the road and 3-1 in neutral-site contests. BG has road wins over Iona, Butler, Ohio State, Kent State, Ball State, Ohio and Toledo, and the Falcons have topped Michigan, Old Dominion and Monmouth in neutral-site action. The team's losses have come to then #18/21-ranked Purdue on the road, to Marist on a neutral court, and at CMU.
• In BGSU's nine home games, the Falcons have averaged 76.3 points per game. BG has topped the 80-point plateau five times this season, with all of those totals coming in home contests.
• BGSU has had a balanced scoring attack this season. Five Falcons are averaging between 8.5 and 14.4 points per game, and two other players have at least 5.0 ppg to date.
• The Falcons' five starters each have attempted between 143 and 214 shots, meaning that every starter is averaging somewhere between 6.5 and 9.8 field-goal attempts per game.
• BGSU leads the MAC and ranks 15th in the nation in scoring defense, having allowed just 56.9 points per game. The Falcons also lead the MAC in scoring margin (+12.9), rebounding margin (+8.5), three-point field-goal percentage (35.5) and three-point FG pct. defense (26.8), and BG is second in the conference in field-goal percentage defense (37.0).
• BGSU is 22nd in the nation in rebounding margin in the most recent NCAA statistics. The Falcons have been out-rebounded in just one game since Nov. 18, as Ball State had a narrow 31-29 edge in that category on Jan. 15.
• In addition to scoring defense and rebounding margin, the Falcons also rank among the top 50 schools in the nation in win-loss percentage (12th), three-point FG defense (16th), free-throw pct. (25th), scoring margin (26th), three-point FG pct. (40th) and three-point FG made per game (50th).
• The Falcons received votes in the USA Today Sports Top 25 coaches poll in 10-straight weeks, but have not done so in either of the last three polls. But, BG garnered seven votes in this week's (Feb. 3) Associated Press poll after picking up three votes in each of the last two weeks.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
• The Falcons enter the Miami game with an overall record of 19-3 and a 9-1 MAC ledger. BGSU currently holds a two-game lead over Akron and a three-game edge on Buffalo in the MAC's East Division race.
• BGSU's non-conference wins included home games vs. Niagara, Milwaukee, Massachusetts and Saint Francis; road games vs. Iona, Butler and Ohio State; and neutral-site matchups against Michigan, Old Dominion and Monmouth. The Falcons' non-league losses came at the hands of Marist (Nov. 22) in the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge, and at Purdue on the road (Dec. 22).
• BGSU opened MAC play with four consecutive double-digit wins, downing Buffalo and preseason East Division favorite Akron at home, and Kent State and Ball State on the road. In a battle of the last two remaining MAC unbeatens, host Central Michigan picked up an 82-79 overtime decision over the Falcons on Jan. 18, but the Brown and Orange have bounced back with five-straight wins.
• After wins over Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois, the Falcons used a 27-4 game-ending run for a 78-62 win at Ohio last week (Jan. 30), and BGSU then downed Toledo, 66-59, on the Rockets' home court last weekend (Feb. 2). The Brown and Orange topped Western Michigan, 72-50, on Wednesday night (Feb. 5). Eight of BG's nine MAC wins – all except the Toledo game – have been by double figures.
• Fifth-year senior Alexis Rogers, fourth-year Falcon Jillian Halfhill and redshirt sophomore Erica Donovan lead a balanced scoring attack. Rogers is averaging 14.4 points per game, while Halfhill has 12.8 ppg and Donovan 10.6 ppg this year to date.
• Sophomore Miriam Justinger has 8.6 points per game, and junior Deborah Hoekstra, a strong candidate for the MAC Sixth Man Award, is scoring 8.5 ppg off the bench. Senior Jill Stein and junior Jasmine Matthews have scored 6.7 and 5.0 points per contest, respectively.
• Stein leads the team and ranks fifth in the MAC in rebounding, with 9.1 boards per game, while Rogers has pulled down 8.4 rpg (eighth in the league) and Donovan 5.5. BGSU has had at least one player with 10 rebounds in 18 of this season's first 22 games.
• Halfhill leads the Falcons with 3.1 assists per outing, with Justinger handing out 2.7 apg to date. Justinger has had a career-high five helpers in each of the last two games, wins over Toledo and WMU. Stein is third on the team in that category, with 2.1 assists per game.
• Rogers is shooting 52.4 percent from the floor, ranking third in the MAC in that category, while Donovan is shooting 44.0% and Hoekstra 43.1%. From long range, Halfhill has made a team-leading 41 three-point field goals, while Hoekstra has hit 32 shots from beyond the arc. Four other Falcons have made between 15 and 24 treys apiece.
• Hoekstra ranks second in the entire MAC in three-point field-goal percentage, having gone 32-of-74 (43.2%) from long distance to date, while Halfhill is third in the league in that category (42.3%). Halfhill hit a career-high six triples in the Western Michigan game.
• Freshmen Rachel Konieczki and Abby Siefker are averaging 1.8 and 1.5 ppg, respectively. Another freshman, Kennedy Kirkpatrick, has seen action in five games off the bench, and classmate Leah Bolton has played in two contests, including the EMU match on Jan. 23. Bolton made her BGSU debut in the Monmouth game back on Dec. 1. Kirkpatrick has not seen action since the Ohio State game the previous week (Nov. 24).
• Halfhill, Justinger, Rogers and Stein each have started all 22 games this season to date, with Donovan starting 21. Donovan started the first 12 games, but Matthews took her place in the lineup for the Buffalo game, as Donovan missed tipoff due to a funeral. Donovan was back in the starting five for the Kent State game, and has started each game since that time.
• Head coach Jennifer Roos and her staff welcomed back seven letterwinners from a year ago, and the program also has added seven newcomers – five to the roster and two to the coaching staff.
• Through 22 games, the Falcons are shooting 42.1 percent from the field, 35.5% from three-point range and 75.4% from the foul line. Opponents are shooting 37.0% from the floor, 26.8% from the arc and 68.8% from the stripe. The Falcons have a scoring margin of +12.9, a rebounding margin of +8.5 and a turnover margin of +0.2 on the year.
• In MAC games, BGSU is shooting 42.2% from the field, 37.1% from three-point land and 81.1% from the line. Opponents have shot 36.8% overall, 23.6% from long range and 62.9% from the stripe in MAC play.
STROH'ME-COURT ADVANTAGE
• The Falcons have enjoyed a long-standing tradition of success at home. Most of that success came at venerable Anderson Arena, where the Brown and Orange enjoyed an outstanding home-court advantage over the years. But, the BG women's basketball program has begun a new tradition of excellence at a new building. The Falcons now own an overall record of 37-7 in the Stroh Center, including a 20-2 record vs. MAC opponents.
• After losing by just one point to nationally-ranked Purdue in the first-ever women's basketball game in the building in November of 2011, the Falcons reeled off 14-straight wins at the Stroh, before losing another one-point game to VCU in the WNIT.
• Last season, the Falcons again won 14 games at home, including 25-point wins over both nationally-ranked Dayton (the Flyers' only regular-season loss all year) and Central Michigan (the Chippewas entered the game with a 7-0 MAC record).
• This year, the Falcons are 9-0 at home heading into the Miami game. BG has won those nine games by an average of 20.8 points.
• The 37-7 mark at the Stroh comes after the Falcons went 333-116 (74.2%) in Anderson Arena during the team's tenure there. The record was even better during MAC play, as the Falcons had a league mark of 192-54 (78.0%) at "The House That Roars" through the years.
TOUGH TO SCORE AT THE STROH
• In 44 games at the Stroh Center, the Falcons have allowed the opponent to reach 70 points just three times. Akron is the only MAC foe to surpass the 60-point mark against the Brown and Orange in 21 trips to the building by conference foes, and the Zips have done so twice (61 points in a BG win last Feb. 20; 65 points in another Falcon victory this season [Jan. 12]). Through the Western Michigan game, BG has allowed an average of 53.6 ppg in all games at the Stroh, and just 51.1 ppg against MAC opponents.
• BG has held 34 of 44 opponents to fewer than 60 points at the Stroh Center. The Falcons have limited 14 of those foes to less than 50 points, and on three occasions, BGSU has kept the opposition under the 40-point mark.
THE MIAMI REDHAWKS
Miami enters Sunday's game with an overall record of 7-14, and the RedHawks are 3-7 in MAC play. MU has split the last four games after a 1-5 start in league action. The RedHawks posted a 71-65 win at Eastern Michigan in the team's last road game (Feb. 2), but MU suffered a 73-65 home loss to Toledo on Thursday night (Feb. 6) in the team's most recent contest. Miami's MAC wins include home victories vs. Akron and Kent State and that road win at EMU. MU is 4-6 at home and 3-8 on the road this season. In MAC play, the RedHawks have a 2-3 record in Oxford and a 1-4 mark away from home. Individually, senior guard Hannah Robertson leads the team in scoring, with 12.6 points per game, and she also has 5.0 rebounds per game to rank second on the team. Freshmen Jillian Spurlock and Nicole Anderson have 10.3 and 8.0 ppg, respectively, and Anderson paces the RedHawks with 6.3 rpg. First-year head coach Cleve Wright has nine returning letterwinners, including three starters, from last year's team. The 2012-13 edition of the RedHawks went 19-13 overall and 10-6 in the MAC.
THE SERIES
The Falcons lead Miami, 45-27, in the all-time series between the teams, but MU has captured the last two meetings. Last year, the RedHawks swept the teams' two matchups, with a narrow 57-54 victory at the Stroh Center (Jan. 24, 2013) and a 76-61 win over the Falcons at Millett Hall (Feb. 23, 2013). The first 2012-13 game snapped a seven-game BGSU series winning streak. The Falcons' last win over MU came two years ago, a 64-55 triumph on 'Senior Day' at the Stroh (Feb. 25, 2012). BGSU is 21-12 in home games, 18-14 on the road and 6-1 in neutral-site contests vs. the Redskins/RedHawks through the years. Jennifer Roos is 0-1 against Miami as a collegiate head coach.
FALCONS VS. THE MAC
The Falcons continue to own the best record in MAC history. Entering the Miami game, BGSU has an all-time record of 382-153 (.714) in MAC regular-season contests, for the most wins and highest winning pct. of all league institutions. And, BG leads the series with all 11 MAC foes, making the Falcons the only team in the league, obviously, with a winning series record against every other school. BG also has the most overall victories (735) and highest overall winning percentage (.653) of any conference school.
DEFENSE!
• During her time as an assistant coach at BGSU, Jennifer Roos served as the team's defensive coordinator. The team enjoyed great success at the defensive end of the floor, and that success continued in her first season as head coach. In 2012-13, Roos and assistant Jesse Fleming helped the Falcons set a school record for fewest points allowed per game – 54.3 – breaking the record set the previous year.
• Last year's team also set new school records for fewest points allowed and lowest opponent field-goal percentage allowed in MAC games. In the 16 conference contests, league foes averaged just 51.9 points and shot only 36.1% from the floor.
• Those trends have continued in the 2013-14 season. In the first 22 games, despite playing a difficult schedule, BGSU has allowed 56.9 points per game and permitted the opponents to shoot just 37.0% from the field to date.
THE FALCONS ARE ...

• 229-38 when making more free throws than the opponent in the Roos Assistant-Coach/Associate-Head-Coach/Interim-Head-Coach/Head-Coaching Era;
• 194-24 when outrebounding the opponent in that 12-plus-year span;
• 70-7 in MAC home games in the last nine-plus seasons;
