Apthorpe, Losby Named National Candidates For Senior CLASS Award

The two Falcons are the only players from Mid-American Conference to be listed for prestigious award
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.—Thirty NCAA® baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the diamond were selected as candidates today for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate baseball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
Only two players in the Mid-American Conference—both from Bowling Green State University—were recognized in the top thirty nationally for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award®. Cody Apthorpe and T.J. Losby were named among the thirty candidates who excel both on and off the diamond.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Losby, a native of Bryan, Ohio, is a captain in 2014 for the second straight season. He holds a 3.242 as an accounting major. He was an Academic All-MAC recipient in 2013. Following the 2013 season in which Losby guided the Bowling Green pitching staff to their best ERA since 1979, he was honored with the prestigious Coaches' Award given out by Danny Schmitz and staff. Active in both the Bowling Green and Bryan communities, Losby has routinely given back to youth baseball players throughout Northwest Ohio by coaching at various camps and clinics. He has also volunteered at Red Cross blood drives, the Wood County Senior Center, and at Kenwood Elementary School's Halloween party. On the field, Losby has been a model of consistency and versatility in Schmitz's lineup, having played in 127 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season. Losby has started all 18 games this season, and his second on the team in RBI.
Apthorpe, a product of Windham High School in Windham, Ohio, is also a captain for Schmitz's squad in 2014. It is the third consecutive season that Apthorpe has been a captain for the Falcons, the first three-time captain in Schmitz's 24 seasons at the helm. He is just the second player in the program's 95-year history to be named a captain in three different seasons. The right-handed pitcher boasts a 3.784 grade point average in middle childhood education, and completed last fall semester with a perfect 4.0. Currently, Apthorpe is student teaching at Wood Lane in Wood County, while balancing the rigorous demands of being a captain and Friday starting pitcher for the defending MAC Champions. Following last season, Apthorpe was named Mr. Falcon, given to the player that best exemplifies the team's motto of "Pride, Attitude, Commitment." He has been active in both the Bowling Green and Winham communities during his collegiate career. In Windham, Apthorpe has volunteered by helping with renovation projects around the city, as well as refereeing youth basketball and baseball games. In BG, he has served as a volunteer during the Red Cross blood drives, at the Wood County Senior Center, and at nursing homes around the area. On the diamond, Apthorpe is tied for fourth in school history with 246.0 innings pitched. He started 17 games a season ago—the most since 1999—and currently has five starts in 2014.
Of the 30 candidates, 11 have cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 or higher with three of those having a perfect 4.0 GPA. There are six CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-Americans and three Baseball America and Louisville Slugger All-Americans from last season. Five candidates play for teams currently ranked in the USA Today top 25 coaches poll.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series® in June.
