BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team will continue their 2014 Mid-American Conference schedule this weekend, as the Falcons will hit the pavement and travel to play Ball State University and Miami University on April 4-6. The Falcons (12-17-1, 2-2 MAC) are coming off a mid-week doubleheader split with Wright State University on April 2, marking the Orange and Brown's first games at Meserve Field. Bowling Green will open the MAC weekend on Friday, April 4 against Ball State in what will mark the home opener for the Cardinals. The Falcons will then head to play the Redhawks in single affairs on Saturday (April 5) and Sunday (April 6) at the Miami Softball Stadium. BGSU will then take on North Dakota on Monday, April 7 in the doubleheader at Meserve field in non-conference action, marking the first meeting between the two programs.
Leading the way offensively for the Falcons are seniors Katie Yoho and Erika Stratton. Yoho, a Grove City, Ohio native, has accumulated 31 hits in 94 at-bats (.330) and has a team-leading 19 RBI and 52 total bases for a .553 slugging percentage. Most recently, Yoho has hit three home runs over her last seven games to give her five on the season, which is tied for the most on the current roster. Meanwhile, Stratton is one of four Falcons to start in all 30 games, recording a .310 (26-for-84) batting average, four doubled, five homers, 18 RBI and a .536 slugging percentage. The Las Vegas, Nev. native has been red-hot at the plate for BGSU, going 12-for-27 (.387) over her last 10 games. During the stretch, the senior went on a five-game hitting streak (March 21-28), has accumulated a total of seven RBI, one double and one home run while hitting fourth in the lineup.
The Falcons have also seen strong pitching efforts in the circle by junior Jamie Kertes and Braiden Dillow. Kertes, who is 8-12 on the year, holds a 2.26 ERA in 30 appearances for the Orange and Brown. Kertes leads the team with 123.2 innings of work with 81 strikeouts, while holding her opponents to a .255 batting average. Dillow, who hails from Lucasville, Ohio, holds a 4-5 record with a 3.31 ERA in 72 innings in-between the chalk. Most recently, Dillow went five innings against the Raiders in game two of its doubleheader on April 2, allowing only one run in her first four innings.
WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY DOUBLEHEADER (April 22)
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Senior Katie Yoho's walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning capped off a two-run come-from-behind extra inning victory by the Bowling Green State University softball team over visiting Wright State University on Wednesday (April 2) evening, as the Falcons (12-17-1) defeated the Raiders (7-20) 6-5 to salvage a split at Meserve Field. Earlier in the day, the Orange and Brown dropped game one of the twinbill by a score of 3-0.
"It's good to get the split today," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "I am proud of the way we fought throughout the entire day."
Yoho led the Orange and Brown offensively, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a home run throughout the game. Senior classmate Erika Stratton also had a strong game at the plate, going 3-for-4 in the contest. Freshman Aspen Searle (2-for-4, RBI) and Madison Schrock (2-for-2, three runs) also contributed in the batter's box with multi-hit games for BGSU.
