Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will return to the Colonel Classic once again this year, the very place where the Falcons took fourth-place overall last year and matched the program's lowest 54-hole team score of 924, +60, at the Arlington Golf & Country Club in Richmond, Ky.
This year's 2014 Colonel Classic, which is once again hosted by Eastern Kentucky University at the par 72, 5,838-yards, Arlington Golf & Country Club golf course in Richmond, Ky., includes 12 teams in Akron, Bethel (Ind.), Bowling Green, Cleveland State, Cumberlands, Eastern Kentucky, Marshall, Morehead State, Ohio, Tennessee Tech, USC Upstate and Xavier.
The teams will play a total of 36 holes, two rounds of play, on Friday, April 4, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. and then will conclude the tournament with the final round of play on Saturday, April 5, starting at 8:15 a.m. weather permitting.
Head Coach Stephanie Young will send a familiar lineup out for the Falcons this weekend in Lily Bartell, Shelby Wilson, Patricia Holt, Bailey Arnold and Hannah Lewis. BGSU will also send two student-athletes in Mikayla Baer and Kelsey Benson to compete as individuals over the two-day event.
Bartell will look to pace the Falcons once more this week, as the sophomore led BGSU with a 54-hole combined score of 232, +19, last time out to place in a tie for 28th-place overall. Last year, at the 2013 Colonel Classic, Bartell posted rounds of 78, 79 and 79 to finish in a tie for 35th overall with a combined score of 236, +20.
Both Wilson and Holt will compete once more for the Falcons this Friday and Saturday, as the two juniors are coming off tournament scores of 233, +20, and 234, +21, respectively, last time out at the 2014 Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational on March 7-9th. Like Bartell, both Wilson and Holt played for the Falcons in last year's Colonel Classic event, as Wilson posted rounds of 77, 79 and 77 to place in a tie for 24th overall with a score of 233, +17, while Holt finished the three round event with scores of 78, 80 and 81 to end up in a tie for 43rd overall with her 54-hole score of 239, +23.
Arnold will return to the very course where she posted a top-five finish last season with rounds of 74, 74 and 78 for a combined 54-hole score of 226, +10. In fact, the senior also posted a score of 226, +10, at the Colonel Classic as a freshman back in 2010-11, which is tied for sixth overall in BGSU's history for the lowest 54-hole individual score. Arnold is coming off a three-round event in which she recorded a score of 240, +27, at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational back in early March.
Lewis will round out the Falcon five this weekend, as she sophomore will be making her debut at the Colonel Classic. Lewis finished her play at the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational with a final round of 75, +4, to shoot a combined three-round score of 236, +23, and place in a tie for 45th overall.
Playing as individuals, both Baer and Benson will be making their 2014 spring debuts this weekend. Baer is coming off her first spring season at BGSU in which the freshman posted a stroke average of 80.25 over 12 rounds of play and recorded a low round 73, +1, at the Great Smokies Intercollegiate. Benson posted an 81.00 stroke average over five rounds of play and turned in a low round 78, +6, at the Rocket Classic over her 2013 fall season.
This will mark the sixth straight year in which the Falcons will compete at the EKU Colonel Classic.
