OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Miami University on Saturday (April 5) afternoon. The Falcons (12-18-1, 2-3 MAC) dropped the first game of the weekend series to the Redhawks (16-16, 4-1 MAC) by a score of 3-1 in a Mid-American Conference showdown at the Miami Softball Stadium.
The Orange and Brown recorded four hits in the game, as Amanda Durham (1-for-3, one run), Madison Schrock (1-for-3), Chelsea Raker (1-for-3), and Katie Yoho (1-for-3) all combined for the Falcons' hits in the game. Yoho, who entered the game leading Bowling Green with a .330 batting average, extended her hitting streak to three games with a single in the sixth inning.
Sophomore pitcher Braiden Dillow worked 4.2 innings in the circle for Bowling Green. The Lucasville, Ohio native allowed zero runs on just three hits while striking out three batters in relief work. Kertes (8-13), who started the game for the Falcons, was credited with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Trailing 3-0 entering the sixth inning, the Orange and Brown broke their scoreless drought with a run to cut the Redhawks' lead to 3-1. Durham, who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle against Northern Illinois last weekend, led off the inning with a single for BGSU's second hit of the game. After advancing to third base off a single by Yoho, Durham plated the Falcons' lone run by stealing home to cut Miami's lead to within two.
The Orange and Brown threatened once more in the top of the seventh inning after Dillow worked a scoreless sixth frame. Needing at least two runs to extend the game, Bowling Green placed runners on second and third with two outs when M. Schrock singled to left center, placing Trista Mokienko on third base. Miami's pitcher, however, forced a ground out to win the first game of the series.
Bowling Green will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon (April 6), taking on the Miami Redhawks in MAC play. First pitch is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Make sure to follow @BGSUSoftball all season long for up-to-the-minute updates.
