The Bowling Green State University softball team will continue Mid-American Conference action this weekend (April 11-13), as the Falcons hit the pavement to take on Akron and Ohio over a three-day span away from Meserve Field. The Falcons (15-18-1) will begin their weekend with a doubleheader against the Zips (16-9, 2-2 MAC) on Friday at Lee R. Jackson Field in Akron, Ohio, which is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Orange and Brown will then conclude the weekend with a two-day series against the Bobcats (19-15, 4-2 MAC) at the Ohio Softball Field in Athens, Ohio on Saturday (5 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
The Falcons will enter the weekend on a three-game winning streak, earning victories in four of their past six games. During the stretch, Bowling Green have recorded a season-best team batting average of .288 (49-for-170), totaling nine doubles, five homers, and 25 RBI. The offensive explosion at the plate has seen the Falcons outscore their opponents by a 27-16 margin. A large part of the recent success in the batter's box is freshman Madison Schrock, Chelsea Raker and Aspen Searle. The three freshmen have combined for 21 hits, four doubles, two homers and 11 RBI over the last six games. Seniors Erika Stratton (.333) and Katie Yoho (.304) have also continued to make large contributions offensively during the stretch, as the two contributed 13 hits, two doubles and four RBI over the last six games. In all, six players have hit .304 or better for the best offensive stretch of the season.
The Orange and Brown have also seen steady pitching performances from junior Jamie Kertes and sophomore Braiden Dillow. Kertes (10-13), who went 3-2 in five appearances over the last six games, takes a team-leading 2.24 ERA with 140.1 innings pitched in the circle in 33 appearances this season. Meanwhile, Dillow enters the weekend with a 3.02 ERA in 28 appearances in the circle. The Lucasville, Ohio native tossed her first collegiate complete game against North Dakota on Monday, April 7, tossing five shutout innings against UND.
Miami University Recap (April 5-6)
Day One: OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to Miami University on Saturday (April 5) afternoon. The Falcons (12-18-1, 2-3 MAC) dropped the first game of the weekend series to the Redhawks (16-16, 4-1 MAC) by a score of 3-1 in a Mid-American Conference showdown at the Miami Softball Stadium.
The Orange and Brown recorded four hits in the game, as Amanda Durham (1-for-3, one run), Madison Schrock (1-for-3), Chelsea Raker (1-for-3), and Katie Yoho (1-for-3) all combined for the Falcons' hits in the game. Yoho, who entered the game leading Bowling Green with a .330 batting average, extended her hitting streak to three games with a single in the sixth inning.
Day Two: OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team defeated Miami University on Sunday (April 6) afternoon, outlasting the Redhawks by a score of 9-5 in 10 innings at the Miami Softball Complex. With the win, the Falcons (13-18-1, 3-3 MAC) got back to .500 in Mid-American Conference play, and earned a weekend series split with the Redhawks (16-17, 4-2 MAC).
The Orange and Brown's four-run 10th inning, led by home runs by freshman Chelsea Raker and Trista Mokienko, propelled Bowling Green to their third victory in the MAC of the 2014 campaign. The Falcons went into extra innings for the second time in three games, staying unbeaten this season when forced to play extra frames.
North Dakota Recap (April 7)
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball showcased a complete team effort with overpowering pitching and a balanced offensive approach at the plate to earn two victories over visiting University of North Dakota on Monday (April 7) afternoon. The Falcons (15-18-1) shutout UND (3-22) in the first game, 3-0, before exploding offensively in an 8-0 run-rule shortened second game at Meserve Field.
"Today was a great sweep," Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg said. "We focused a lot on playing hard in the first game and we came out and responded early."

PRESEASON POLL
BGSU was picked to finish fourth in the MAC Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches. The Falcons finished fourth in the East Division during the regular season a year ago. Kent State was tabbed to be the favorite in the MAC East Division in 2014, receiving seven first-place votes. Ohio and Miami each received two first place votes and was picked second and third in the East, respectively. After Bowling Green, Akron was selected fifth and, despite receiving a first-place vote; Buffalo was selected to finish last.
