Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University swimmer Joelle Scheps was named one of 12 Capital One Academic All-District performers today, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Scheps was selected as an at-large in District 5, which covers all NCAA Division I student-athletes in the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio in the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo. In fact, BGSU tennis' Nikki Chiricosta joins Scheps on the team, making Bowling Green one of only three schools in District 5, along with Indiana and Notre Dame, to have two representatives on the 12-person team.
"I am really proud and happy for Joelle for earning the Academic All-District recognition," BGSU swimming coach Petra Martin said. "She is a true ambassador of the quality of work that we do here in Bowling Green in the pool and also in the classroom. The great work and experience that Joelle gained as a Falcon student-athlete will take her well ahead in her personal and professional life and that is exactly what we want to see for our athletes. I would like to say thank you to all of the swimming and diving staff, athletic-academic staff, Joelle's professors, advisers and everyone else that had a tremendous impact on Joelle's success as a Falcon."
Scheps holds a 4.0 grade point average in individualized business and was recently named Academic All-MAC. She earned the MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award once during the season and was a second team All-MAC performer in the pool. Scheps was part of three relay teams that broke school records during the 2013-14 season, including the 400 freestyle relay that finished second at the MAC Championships. Individually, she was fourth at the MAC Championships in the 200 freestyle and seventh in the 200 individual medley.
During the 2013-14 season, Scheps posted the team's five fastest times in the 100 butterfly. She competed in the event six times in dual meets, placing first three times and second the other three times. Scheps was also 4-0 in the 200 individual medley in dual meets this year, helping the Falcons close the year with five consecutive dual meet victories for a 6-3 record on the year.
All those who are named Academic All-District are placed on the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
