June 28, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
Sacramento, Calif. – Bowling Green State University's Brooke Pleger finished as the top collegiate hammer thrower at the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships Saturday. The senior-to-be threw the hammer 208-feet-9 to finish 10th among the 18 best hammer throwers in the United States.
Five active college student-athletes qualified for the field and Pleger finished ahead of the other four. Brittany Funk, a fellow Mid-American Conference student-athlete who just completed her eligibility at Akron, was 11th at 204-4. Colorado's Emily Hunsucker was 13th, followed by LSU's Denise Hinton in 15th and Boise State's Hayli Bozarth in 16th.
Nike's Amanda Bingson won the championship for the second consecutive year with a toss of 246-3 and teammate Jessica Cosby Toruga was second at 235-4. Amber Campbell, of Mjolnir Throwers Club, was third at 234-1. Pleger's 10th place finish was one better than a year ago at the meet, when she placed second among collegiate student-athletes.
Pleger's best throw came on her first attempt. She followed with a throw of 207-3 but then fouled on her last attempt needing a mark better than 224-5 to qualify for finals among the top eight.
With the finish, Pleger qualifies to compete at the 2014 North America Central America Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Championships in Kamloops, British Columbia Aug. 8-10 with hammer throw taking place on the first day of competition. More than 30 countries will send representatives to the international meet.
The qualification extends Pleger's summer following one of the best individual seasons in BGSU women's track and field history. She placed third at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships and earned recognition as both a First Team All-American and a Third Team Academic All-American.
