New Orleans, La. – Bowling Green State University redshirt junior Brooke Pleger has been named the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
"This is a great honor for Brooke and for the program," BGSU Track and Field Coach Lou Snelling said. "She has invested an enormous amount of work to get to this point in her career. It is proof again that national caliber athletes can be successful at Bowling Green."
Pleger will compete in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships Wednesday in the hammer throw in Eugene, Ore. As the No. 2 ranked hammer thrower in the country, she is positioned to become just the second two-time First Team All-American in program history. She finished second at the NCAA East Regional preliminary round, the first time this year that she did not place first at a meet.
Pleger's season has been one of the greatest in BGSU history, as she broke her own school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 223-feet at the Toledo Invitational. She threw at least 208-7 in every meet she competed, a mark that only 10 other athletes in the country have hit even once this year. Pleger won the MAC Championship for the second consecutive season, breaking her own meet record in the process with a toss of 218-9. She was a three-time MAC Field Athlete of the Week, earned First Team All-MAC honors and was recently named Capital One Academic All-District as she boasts a 3.64 grade point average in nursing.
"It's a fantastic honor to be recognized by the coaches of the region and it's something for Brooke to be very proud of," BGSU throws coach Matt Conly said. "She put a tremendous amount of hard work into the achievements that lead to this honor. It is earned and deserved."
Pleger is the first BGSU student-athlete to earn a USTFCCCA Region Athlete of the Year award. She will look to become the first national champion in program history Wednesday at 4:30 pm ET.
