Five Falcons Named USTFCCCA All-Academic Individuals
July 30, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
New Orleans, La. – All five Bowling Green State University track and field student-athletes who qualified for the NCAA Regional Preliminary round were named All-Academic by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Tina Perrine, Jeanette Pettigrew, Brooke Pleger, Kori Reiser and Makenzie Wheat were all recognized among the 727 female student-athletes on the list. In order to earn the award, a student-athlete must have advanced to the NCAA regional round and posted a 3.25 cumulative grade point average.
"We have preached as a staff the importance of working hard both in the classroom and on the track," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "These five athletes exemplify that ideal. We are proud of them and the elite company our program is in. The Mid-American Conference is one of the strongest mid-major conferences for track and field in the country. The MAC had the seventh-most entries to the NCAA Track & Field Championships in the nation. With that in mind, it is meaningful that we had the second-highest amount of All-Academic awards in the conference."
Pleger boasts a 3.64 grade point average in nursing and finished second in the hammer throw at the NCAA Regional Preliminary round, advancing to nationals and finishing third in the country. Perrine had a 3.63 grade point average in criminal justice, competing in both the hammer throw and discus at the regional meet. Reiser boasts a 3.60 GPA as an education intervention specialist major who also qualified for regionals in the hammer throw and discus. Pettigrew has a 3.45 GPA in sport management and ran the 100 and 200 in regionals. Wheat has a 3.32 GPA in graphic design and took part in the shot put at regionals.
BGSU completed a successful outdoor season by scoring 60 points at the MAC Championships, almost triple the team's total of 23 from a year earlier. The Falcons placed seventh overall at the meet and sent five student-athletes to the NCAA Regionals to compete in eight events. Pleger went on to the NCAA National Championships and boasted the top result in BGSU women's track and field history with a third-place finish in the hammer throw.
