Blogging With Brooke: Saying Goodbye!
August 11, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
BGSU senior hammer thrower Brooke Pleger represented the Falcons and earned a gold medal for Team USA at the U-23 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) International Athletics Championship in Kamloops, British Columbia Aug. 8. Along the way, she had the unique opportunity to train at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. During that time, Pleger checked in with BGSUFalcons.com. This is her sixth and final entry.

Saturday morning I woke up feeling on top of the world. It almost felt like a dream, but when I turned and saw my flag sitting on the desk, I knew it was reality.Â

I spent most of the day Saturday cheering on my fellow USA teammates in their perspective events. I watched mens javelin, and womens shot and javelin. USA took the gold in mens javelin, and took the gold and silver in both womens shot and womens javelin. It was pretty cool to watch.
After spending the afternoon at the track, Brittany (Funk) and I went to downtown Kamloops with my mom and grandma to walk around a car show. Every year, Kamloops has a car show called "Hot Nite in the City" where they have all kinds of restored cars on the streets downtown. It was pretty fun walking around and seeing all the different types of cars and how they had all been restored. We finished the evening at Rib Fest, another summer activity in downtown Kamloops that they have yearly in August. The ribs were delicious, and there was even some live music to go along with it.
Sunday, Aug. 10
This morning I was up bright and early to watch mens hammer and shot. We took the silver in mens hammer, and went gold and silver in mens shot. Team USA ended up having the highest medal count, and I believe it was somewhere around 64 medals.
Today was the last day of my trip and I definitely have mixed emotions. I am so ready to get home and to see my family and my dogs, but I am also a little sad that this whole experience is already over. I got to spend time training at the Olympic Training Center, I got to travel all around San Diego and explore, I got to fly up to Kamloops with Team USA to compete for my country, and I got to stand on top of the medal stand wrapped in my country's flag while listening to my national anthem being played. I feel so blessed beyond measure to have had this opportunity. I am so thankful for the incredible support I have received from everyone while I have been out here. I just want to take a minute to thank my entire BGSU family for all of the support, it means the world to me. Just the little tweets, Facebook messages and emails of congratulations are all so special to me. I am so proud to be a Falcon, and I truly love my Falcon family. This is my last blog post of the trip, so thank you all so much for reading and for taking this journey with me. It's been a blast!
