Bowling Green, Ohio – Two newcomers in Skylar Fleak and Kara Ross each scored a goal for the BGSU women's' soccer team, as Bowling Green State University played the University of Illinois at Chicago to a 2-2 draw in exhibition play at Cochrane Stadium. The two teams played three 30 minute periods for the scrimmage.
The Falcons controlled possession and the pace of play for most of the first 30 minute period, as the home team outshot the Flames 11-5.
Both teams looked to score early, as each team put a shot on goal in the opening 10 minutes of the contest with the Falcons' Sidney Huth seeing her first shot attempt stopped by UIC keeper Kelly Fritz on a 1-v-1 down the right side of the box in the eighth minute.
After the Falcons' Haley Parkinson put a shot on frame in the 11th minute, Huth lined up a shot on the right front post that was corralled in by Fritz in the 15th minute to keep the match scoreless.
The two teams swapped scoring chances back and forth for the rest of the opening period until in the 30th minute Fleak put one past the UIC goalkeeper to put the Falcons on the scoreboard. Fellow freshman Leah Runkle chased down a long ball and made a sliding save to keep the ball from crossing the end line. The pass headed right to the front of the goal where Fleak put the shot into the back of the net around the diving keeper to give BGSU a 1-0 lead.
Both teams' defenses settled in more in the second period, as the two teams combined for just six shots over the second 30 minute session.
BGSU's Ross opened up the period with a shot from 28-yards out that found the waiting arms of new UIC goalkeeper Annie Dicanio, while BGSU freshman goalkeeper Evelina Hellgren made a stop on a Jessica Belsito shot attempt in the 40th minute and a Jasmin Carrera laser toward the goal in the 51st minute to keep the Falcons out in front by one.
The next shot of the contest would see Ross make good on an attempt in the middle of the box, as fellow teammate Melissa Needham tracked down the loose ball and sent it towards the box. The deflected pass found the right foot of Ross who shot and scored in the 59th minute to put the Orange and Brown up 2-0.
However, only 10 seconds later, the Flames got in the scoring column, as UIC quickly scored off the kick-off as Emily Wauer answered with a goal to cut the Falcon lead back to one at 2-1.
The third period saw the Falcons' defense tested, as UIC answered shots from BGSU's Parkinson and Runkle with attempts from Wauer and Emi Yamamoto only to see both goalkeepers come up with big plays between the posts.
Yet the equalizer would come in the 69th minute, as the Falcons were called for a takedown foul in the box, giving the Flames a penalty kick. On the ensuing PK, Yamamoto put a ball just inside the left front post and beyond the diving outstretched hands of Hellgren to tie the match up at 2-2.
Sophomore Jessica Creech, senior Ashley Garr and Fleak each tried to notch the go-ahead goal over the final 20 minutes of play, yet were unable to find the back of the net as the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Hellgren had nine saves over the 90 minute contest, posting three saves in the first 30 minutes of play, two stops in the second period and another four saves in the third 30 minute segment of the match.
Huth led the Falcons offensive charge with four shots, two of which were on goal, while Parkinson and Fleak each had three shots apiece for BGSU.
For UIC offensively, Wauer led the way with three shots, placing all three on frame, while three other players tallied two shots apiece.
BGSU held a 20-13 shots advantage, however, UIC had 11 shots on goal compared to the Falcons' nine for the 90 minute contest.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday, Aug. 15, as BGSU will host Wright State in exhibition play at 7 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.
