Nine Falcons Honored For Academics By NACGC/W
August 19, 2014 | Gymnastics
Bowling Green, Ohio - Nine Bowling Green State University gymnasts were recognized by the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches for Women as NACGC/W Scholastic All-Americans. Student-athletes must earn a 3.50 GPA or higher in order to be honored.
"I am incredibly proud of our team accomplishments in the classroom," said head coach Kerrie Turner. "Clearly this team has embraced our philosophy of excellence in all realms of life, not just the gym."
Lauren Feely (4.00 GPA in early childhood education), Rachel Reis (4.00 GPA in exercise science), Alyssa Nocella (3.89 GPA in exercise science), Caroline Ellingboe (3.84 GPA in graphic design), Megan Harrington (3.82 GPA in communications), Megan Valentini (3.80 GPA in exercise science), Rachel Perry (3.76 GPA in chemistry), Katrina Carpenter (3.56 GPA in early childhood education) and Gina Locigno (3.52 GPA in individualized studies) comprised a group of 517 student-athletes that were honored by the organization.
Feely, the 2014 MAC Freshman of the Year, and Reis were two of just 63 gymnasts that earned a 4.00 GPA, while Ellingboe and Nocella were recognized for the second straight year.
Overall, the Falcons placed 18th in the nation with a team GPA of 3.4738, improving on last year's 3.1471 GPA that ranked 55th.
Bowling Green also nearly doubled last year's total number of honorees, as five Falcons were recognized by the NACGC/W in 2013.
"Assistant Coach Sunny Marchand worked with our student-athletes to make sure they were communicating academic concerns to our student-athlete services staff and to their professors on campus," said Turner. "Her diligence on a weekly basis clearly made an impact on the team, and the expectations we have for their performance in the classroom.
"Truly, we have outstanding students and athletes on this team and I am so pleased to see them balancing both aspects of life brilliantly."
The Falcons are fresh off a third place finish at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championships – the program's best finish in 22 years. Turner returns two All-Conference selections in Nocella and Feely, as well as the MAC vault champion in Amanda Lievendag.
Bowling Green will open its 2014 campaign by hosting Michigan State inside of Anderson Arena on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 4 pm.
