Former Falcon Standout Named Assistant Baseball Coach

Ryan Shay joins Schmitz's staff for the 2014-15 season
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Head baseball coach Danny Schmitz has announced the hiring of newly appointed assistant baseball coach, Ryan Shay. A former standout for the Falcons, Shay returns to his alma mater to oversee the infielders, baserunning, and hitting.
"Ryan brings a wealth of experience to our staff not only as a Division I player, but as a Division I coach," Schmitz began. "Having been through our program, Ryan knows what it takes to develop players into championship-caliber student-athletes."
Shay has plenty of baseball experience outside of his playing days at BGSU. Following a professional career in the Frontier League. Shay coached at Bowling Green, Divine Child High School, and Select Baseball Training Academy. He also served as an intern in the baseball office at Wayne State University while completing his Masters Degree.
"We are excited to add Ryan to our coaching staff," Schmitz continued. "He helped our program to back-to-back MAC championships in 2008 and 2009, and we look forward to him using that experience to continue the winning culture of Falcon baseball."
The former shortstop finished his career as a two-time All-MAC performer, while also earning All-Mideast Region honors at shortstop in both 2008 and 2009. He finished his career with 749 at-bats (first in school history), 177 runs scored (third), 252 hits (second), 53 doubles (second), 372 total bases (fourth), 205 games played (third), and 578 assists (first).
"I'm excited to be back with the BGSU baseball program," Shay said. "I get to work with, and learn from, some great coaches. I'm excited to help these student-athletes develop both on and off the field, and continue to push the program to new heights."
Shay will begin his duties immediately, as fall semester classes began on Monday (Aug. 25). Shay will coach with Rick Blanc and Garrett Gray under Schmitz's guidance for the 2015 season, which is Schmitz's 25th at Bowling Green.
