Martin, Miller capture first win of their respective BG careers
The Bowling Green State University tennis team got the 2014-15 season underway on Friday (Sept. 12), competing at the Miami Invitational. A pair of Falcon freshmen picked up a doubles win in their respective collegiate debuts in the invite, which is being held at Hepburn Varsity Tennis Courts.

In their first-ever collegiate action, Meili Martin and Megan Miller teamed up for a decisive 8-2 win over an Eastern Kentucky University tandem. The doubles duo of junior Drew Fillis and sophomore Brittany Plaszewski suffered a narrow 8-6 loss, while the team of sophomore Harley Hutchison and freshman Madison Adams dropped an 8-4 decision. All three of BG's doubles matches on Friday came against EKU.
"It was good to get a chance to play against another team in a competitive setting," said Falcon head coach Olga Elkin. "Our four freshmen all got valuable experience, and I'm thrilled for Meili and Megan to pick up their first collegiate win. We strive to get better every day, and we will look to continue improving on Saturday."
In singles play, the Falcons competed against Xavier University, and the Musketeers swept all six matches. BGSU's singles competitors included two sophomores and four freshmen.
At the second flight, Adams pushed XU's Alex Brinker to a third-set super-tiebreaker. Adams dropped her opening set by a narrow 7-5 score, then rebounded for a 6-3 win in the second set. Brinker, however, eked out a 10-8 decision in the 'breaker to capture the win.
At the fourth flight, Plaszewski went to a tiebreaker in her opening set, before Amina Ismail pulled out a 7-5 decision. Ismail went on for a 6-3 victory in the second set at flight number four.
For the Falcons, Hutchison competed at the top flight, while freshmen Adams and Martin played at the second and third flights, respectively. Miller played at the fifth flight, while freshman Emily Witt's collegiate debut came at the sixth flight.
BGSU's participation in the Miami Invitational concludes on Saturday (Sept. 13), and the Falcons will host the BGSU Invitational next weekend at Keefe Courts and Bowling Green High School.
