Sophomore Harley Hutchison (pictured) and freshmen Madison Adams, Meili Martin and Megan Miller each posted victories on the second day of the invite. Hutchison and Adams teamed up for a doubles victory at the top flight, while Martin and Miller picked up the first singles wins of their collegiate careers.
"Overall, I am very pleased with what I saw from the team as a whole," said first-year BGSU coach Olga Elkin. "It was great to finally be able to see the girls compete, and their effort and attitudes were outstanding.
"Even though we didn't get the results we wanted, we took a lot away from this weekend and definitely got better.
On Saturday, the Falcons competed against Miami and Xavier in doubles, and faced off against Eastern Kentucky and MU in singles play. Hutchison and Adams picked up an 8-4 win at the top doubles flight, against the MU team of Shteyn/Thurman, and that Falcon duo lost a narrow decision to a Xavier tandem, falling in a tiebreaker.
All three of BGSU's doubles matches vs. MU ended up with 8-4 scores, with the Martin/Miller team falling at flight number two, and the duo of junior Drew Fillis and sophomore Brittany Plaszewski dropping a third-flight contest.
Martin and Miller competed at the second flight vs. XU, while Plaszewski teamed up with freshman Emily Witt at flight number three vs. the Musketeers.
In singles play, the Falcons captured two of the six matches vs. EKU, while host MU swept the matches from the Brown and Orange. Martin picked up the first singles win of her BGSU tenure, sweeping EKU's Dominika Hadnadova by a 6-2, 6-3 result.
At the fifth flight, Miller swept Melissa Gerritsen, taking the first set by a 6-4 score and winning the second in a tiebreaker.
For the second-straight day, BG's singles lineup consisted of two sophomores and the Falcons' four frosh. Hutchison played at the top flight, with Adams at flight number two for all three singles matches on the weekend. The rest of the team's singles lineup vs. EKU included Martin, Plaszewski, Miller and Witt. Miller and Plaszewski switched places in the lineup for the matches vs. Miami, with Miller moving up to the fourth flight and Plaszewski competing at the fifth.
"We improved both individually and as a team this weekend," said Elkin. "We're excited to get back to practice this week and work on some things, and we're very excited for our home tournament this weekend."
The Falcons will host the BGSU Invitational next Friday and Saturday (Sept. 19-20), with matches to be held at Keefe Courts as well as Bowling Green High School.
