Adams, like many of her teammates, won a tiebreaker on Saturday. In the case of the Wexford, Pa., native, however, her tiebreaker came in the championship match of the second singles flight. Adams downed Cincinnati sophomore Katya Bure to capture the crown.
Adams dropped a narrow opening set, losing a tiebreaker by a 7-5 score against Bure. The Falcon freshman responded by winning the second set by a 6-2 margin, then captured the third-set 10-point tiebreaker by a 10-5 result.
"It was a close first set, so I just kind of stuck with the same game plan," said Adams. "In tennis, you're trained to try to forget about the previous set and put it all behind you. I just tried to focus on the second set.
"In the (third-set) tiebreaker, you definitely have to focus on not making any bad decisions -- double-faults, going for anything too risky -- so I just tried to stay focused and avoid mistakes."
Fellow Falcon frosh Meili Martin and Megan Miller each won matches that featured tiebreakers as well on Saturday. Martin's opponent defaulted on Saturday, so she played a match against Detroit's Dominika Lackova, who originally was in the No. 2 singles draw. Lackova's Saturday opponent also defaulted. Martin won her opening set, only to see Lackova roar back to capture the second set. Undaunted, the Proctorville, Ohio, native won a 10-6 'breaker to take the match.
At the fourth flight, Miller downed UIC's Bianca Zuzu by a 6-2 result in the opening set, then saw her second set go to a tiebreaker. The Sylvania, Ohio, native emerged victorious by a 7-4 score to capture the win.
Sophomore Hannah Drayton also won a tiebreaker on Saturday, defeating Cleveland State's Princess Gbadamosi in a tight 11-9 third-set 'breaker. Drayton won her opening set, lost the second set, then outlasted Gbadamosi to capture third place in the fifth flight.
"We had a very good day today," said Falcon head coach Olga Elkin. "I'm very happy that four players, including three freshmen, battled through tiebreakers and won. That says a lot about them; they were fantastic."
Sophomore Harley Hutchison competed with Adams in doubles this weekend, but sat out her Saturday singles match after sustaining an injury late in her final doubles contest on Saturday morning. Freshman Emily Witt and sophomore Brittany Plaszewski competed at the sixth and seventh singles flights, respectively, for the Falcons this weekend.
In doubles play, all three BGSU teams went 1-1 on Saturday. The Adams/Hutchison duo split their two Saturday matches at the top flight, downing a UIC team before falling to a Detroit tandem.
At flight number two, Drayton and Martin lost to a CSU team in a tiebreaker, before downing a Detroit duo by an 8-4 score in the third-place match. The third flight saw Miller and Witt pick up an 8-3 victory over a team from IPFW, before losing to a UC team in the back-draw final. Plaszewski, with UIC's Melika LeBlanc at the fourth flight, won a pair of matches on Saturday.
Team scores were not kept at this weekend's invite, which featured BGSU, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Detroit, IPFW, Toledo, UIC and Youngstown State.
The Falcons are now idle from competition for several weeks. BGSU returns to the courts on Oct. 10-11, when the Falcons will be in Cincinnati for the UC Invitational.
