Oxford, Ohio – Bowling Green State University goalkeeper Lauren Cadel posted nine saves in goal for the Falcons on Sunday afternoon, however, Miami was able to get two first half goals to defeat the Falcons 2-0 in MAC play at the Miami Soccer Field in Oxford, Ohio.
The loss drops BGSU to 1-8-0 overall and 0-2-0 in MAC play, while Miami moves to 7-2-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in conference play with the home win.
"Miami is a good team that found a way to capitalize on their opportunities. Lauren (Cadel) made a few key saves as well, that kept the game tight. Although we didn't come out as sharp as we needed to, the team competed and battled through the final whistle creating a really dangerous chance with a few seconds left in the game," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We are continuing to find out who we are individually and collectively, and every game is moving us forward in our process."
After leaving Friday night's match in the first half at Ball State due to an injury on a collision in front of the goal, Cadel started the match in goal for the Falcons and was tested immediately on a shot from Miami less than four minutes into the match from Maggie Scott.
Cadel made the save on the play, but then saw the Redhawks' Kelsey Dinges send back-to-back shots in the eighth and 10th minutes of play high over the goal and then watched as a BGSU defender blocked a Jess Bronke shot attempt in the 14th minute to give the home team a corner kick.
On the ensuing corner kick, Miami's Dingles played the ball into the box which found the head of Scott who placed the header past Cadel and into the back of the goal to put the Redhawks on top 1-0 at the 14 minute mark.
Miami continued to put pressure on Cadel and the BGSU defense, as the Redhawks registered shots from Rachel Marble, which flew high of the crossbar in the 16th minute, and another attempt from Dinges in the 19th minute which was knocked away by Cadel to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of Miami.
Following a third save from Cadel in the 22nd minute on a Kat Zalar shot, the Redhawks added a second goal two minutes later as Haley Walter took a pass from Marble and dribbled from the middle out wide before blasting a shot that just snuck by Cadel at the far post in the 24th minute.
With the Redhawks up 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining in the first half of play, neither team was able to find much offensive opportunities over the next several minutes. Miami posted shots in the 30th, 34th and 36th minutes, with Cadel making yet another save on the third shot during that span, while BGSU's first and lone shot attempt in the first half came off the foot of freshman Madison Schupbach which went wide of the goal in the 44th minute.
While the second half started out much like the first, the BGSU defense refused to break, as the Falcons blocked three straight Miami shots in a four minute span before Cadel recorded another stop in the 61st minute on a Dinges shot.
Cadel would make four more saves over the final 20 minutes of play – one in the 73rd minute, two in the 85th minute and another in the 87th minute to give her nine total stops on the afternoon.
Redshirt-senior defender Kylie Briem tried a last second shot attempt late in the match to spoil Miami's shutout bid, but it soared high of the goal as the final horn sounded to give Miami the 2-0 MAC win.
BGSU was outshot 25-2 for the match, while Miami also held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Bowling Green (1-8-0, 0-2-0 MAC) will remain on the road in MAC play next weekend, as the Falcons will take on Buffalo on Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. in Buffalo, New York, before wrapping up its five-match road trip at Akron on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 12 p.m. in Akron, Ohio.
