Coach of the Year Leads MAC Champions into '14-15

The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has announced the schedule for the 2014-15 season. Head coach Jennifer Roos and the Falcons will once again play a rigorous non-league schedule to prepare for the always-challenging Mid-American Conference slate.

The non-league schedule is highlighted by two tournaments – one on each coast – as well as a trio of home games. The regular season begins with back-to-back games at the Stroh Center, as the Falcons take on Bucknell (Nov. 14) and Iona (Nov. 18). BGSU's other non-conference home game sees Cincinnati come to town on Dec. 7.
The Falcons will head to Los Angeles, Calif., to take part in a tournament hosted by Loyola Marymount over Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 28-29). UAB and UC Irvine round out the four-team field for that tourney.
Then, a month later, BGSU jets to Miami, Fla., for the FIU Tournament (Dec. 29-30). Auburn and Hampton join BG and the host school in that two-day affair.
BGSU's other non-conference games, all on the road, see the Falcons face Milwaukee (Nov. 22), Saint Francis (Pa.) (Dec. 13), Illinois State (Dec. 19) and Bradley (Dec. 21). The SFU game will be played in Johnstown, Pa.
"We have put together another challenging non-conference schedule for the 2014-15 season," said Roos, the 2014 MAC Coach of the Year. "We will play eight of our 11 non-league games away from the Stroh Center, so we will have to learn how to play on the road quickly, with a team consisting of eight freshmen or sophomores among our 12 total players.
"That experience, however, along with our three home games vs. Bucknell, Iona and Cincinnati, should help prepare us greatly for the rigors of Mid-American Conference competition."
BGSU and the rest of the MAC schools play an 18-game conference regular-season schedule for the second consecutive year. As in recent years, the Falcons will play two games against each of the other MAC East Division foes – Akron, Buffalo, Kent State, Miami and Ohio – and BG will meet two West Division opponents two times apiece. In 2014-15, the Falcons meet both Ball State and Northern Illinois twice. BG plays single games vs. Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Western Michigan.
The league schedule begins with a home game vs. Ball State, the team that eliminated the Falcons from the 2014 MAC Tournament, on Saturday, Jan. 3. The road slate begins the following Wednesday (Jan. 7), with the first of back-to-back trips to Northeast Ohio. BG faces Akron on that evening, before meeting Kent State three days later (Jan. 10) in Kent.
Roos and Company then play three-straight cross-divisional contests, hosting NIU on Jan. 14 before getting on the bus to play EMU (Jan. 17) and WMU (Jan. 21). Miami comes to town on Saturday, Jan. 24, before the Falcons head to the MAC's "West Coast" for a midweek matchup with NIU (Jan. 28).
The month of January comes to an end with a BGSU-UT clash at the Stroh Center on Saturday, Jan. 31, and February begins with a matchup of last year's MAC divisional winners, as Central Michigan comes to town on Feb. 4. CMU was the only team to beat BGSU in MAC regular-season play last year, downing the Falcons in overtime in Mount Pleasant before the Falcons won the return match at the Stroh.
BGSU sandwiches weekend trips to Buffalo (Feb. 7) and BSU (Feb. 14) around a Wednesday home game vs. Ohio (Feb. 11), and the Falcons host KSU in late February (Feb. 21) before ending the month with trips to Miami (Feb. 25) and Ohio (Feb. 28). That Kent State matchup is the first of five consecutive intra-divisional matchups to close out the regular-season schedule.
March begins, and the regular season ends, with home games vs. Buffalo (March 4) and Akron (March 7). The latter game will be 'Senior Day' at the Stroh Center, as fourth-year Falcons Deborah Hoekstra and Jasmine Matthews will be recognized in ceremonies prior to tipoff.
"Our 18-game MAC schedule will provide us with challenges from beginning to end," said Roos, who is 54-16 overall and 28-6 in MAC regular-season play in two years as head coach of the Falcons. "Every season there is parity within this league, but that is more true this season than any other. This conference is full of great coaches and extremely talented student-athletes, and it will once again produce numerous national post season berths in March."
The MAC Tournament begins just two days after the UA game, with first-round contests at campus sites on Monday, March 9.
The remainder of the MAC Tournament takes place in Cleveland, including the second (March 11) and third rounds (March 12), the semifinals (March 13) and the championship game (March 14). BGSU has advanced at least as far as the semifinal round in 10 of the last 11 seasons, and to the championship contest in seven of those years.
For the 2014-15 Falcons and their fans, the fun begins on Friday, Nov. 7, with an exhibition game vs. Davis & Elkins at the Stroh Center. The 13-game home schedule (12 regular-season games plus the exhibition) includes five Saturday contests, along with four games on Wednesday, two on Friday and one each on Tuesday and Sunday.
Roos and her staff – assistant coaches Jesse Fleming, Jacey Brooks and Sahar Nusseibeh and director of operations Monique Rosati – welcome back six letterwinners, including two starters, from last season's 30-win team. Seniors Hoekstra and Matthews are joined by juniors Erica Donovan and Miriam Justinger, sophomores Rachel Konieczki and Abby Siefker, redshirt freshmen Leah Bolton and Kennedy Kirkpatrick, and true freshmen Sarah Baer, Rachel Myers, Haley Puk and Lauren Webb.
The 2013-14 Falcons went 30-5 overall, posting the second-highest win total in school and MAC history, and BGSU captured the MAC's regular-season title with a 17-1 conference mark. Roos and the Falcons advanced to national postseason play for the 10th consecutive year, earning a berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament and winning three games in that tourney to advance to the quarterfinal round.
