Ann Arbor, Mich. – Bowling Green State University sophomore Makenzie Wheat broke a school record that had stood for 21 years as the BGSU indoor track & field team competed at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, hosted by the University of Michigan, Saturday.
Wheat threw the shot put 52-feet-1, a distance that ranks her among the top 20 in the country this year, to place second at the meet and shatter the school record. The previous best mark of 51-4.5 was established by BGSU Athletics Hall of Famer Nikki Lessig in 1994. Lessig was a two-time All-American in the shot put, finishing seventh in the country in 1995.
In fact, not only did BGSU show top level talent in the shot put at the meet, but the Falcons also showed depth. Redshirt freshman Aliyah Gustafson set a new personal best with a throw of 49-4.5, a distance that earns her automatic qualification to the Mid-American Conference Championships.
Although the Falcon distance runners did not compete during the meet, the team got strong results from both sprinters and jumpers as well. Freshman Kyla Paster placed second in the long jump with a leap of 18-0.25.
Junior Tiera Parker also set a new personal best in the long jump and finished fifth overall at 17-4. Sprinter Brittany Sinclair set new PR's in both the 60 (7.86 seconds) and the 200 (25.41 seconds). Freshman Dorresha Green ran a 7.81 in the 60 to qualify for the finals and junior Demetra Taylor ran 9.06 in the 60 hurdles for the fastest time by a Falcon this year.
"We put in a lot of good work today that was highlighted by Makenzie's school record and Aliyah's auto mark in the shot put," BGSU head coach Lou Snelling said. "We will look to build on that this Friday at home and are excited to see more of the team open up."
BGSU will return home to host the team's second and final indoor meet at Perry Field House Friday night. The Falcons will welcome Miami, Toledo, Dayton and Ohio to Bowling Green for the Tom Wright Classic, beginning at 5 pm.
