"We saw some signs of progress tonight," said head coach Olga Elkin. "We're just taking it one day at a time. The team is working hard, and that's all I can ask from them."
Sophomore Harley Hutchison and freshman Megan Miller, who teamed up for a victory at the number-one doubles flight on Friday night vs. Detroit, captured a win vs. the Penguins on Sunday. Hutchison and Miller burst out to a 4-0 lead against YSU's Marta Burak and Dominika Lackova, before the Penguins won four of the next five games. Hutchison and Miller, however, won the next game to clinch the victory.
The Penguins, predicted to win the 2015 Horizon League title in the preseason coaches' poll, took the doubles point, picking up wins at the second and third flights to take a 1-0 lead.
In singles, Miller and her opponent split their two sets, just as was the case on Friday. In the UDM match, Miller came out on top by a narrow 10-8 decision in the 10-point tiebreaker. On Sunday, Miller and Lackova battled through a back-and-forth 'breaker, before Lackova took the final two points for a 10-8 decision.
Hutchison fell to Burak at the top flight, while freshman Emily Witt dropped a narrow second set against Annina Brendel at flight number three. Witt dropped her opening set by a 6-1 score, but battled her YSU opponent through a tight second set. Witt tied the score at 3-3 and again at 4-4 before Brendel was able to take the final two games.
A trio of Falcon newcomers comprised half of the lineup, as sophomores Leeah Floyd and Antonina Farrar and freshman Sydney Seeley played at flights four, five and six, respectively. Each of the three had been shut out in their respective singles debuts on Friday, but the trio showed marked improvement on Sunday night.
At the fourth flight, Floyd won two of her first five games against Nehel Sahni, before the YSU soph pulled away. Floyd took a 1-0 lead in the second set before Sahni rallied to capture the set and the match.
Farrar won a pair of games in her fifth-flight match vs. Victoria Ferry, while Seeley won a game in the second set against YSU's Julianna Heino. Farrar, Floyd and Seeley all joined the team earlier in January, and made their first-ever BG appearances on Friday night.
"We will work a lot individually (in practice this week)," said Elkin. "Now that I have an assistant coach on board, we were each able to focus on watching a couple matches. Now, we are able to see what everyone needs to work on; we will work on some individual stuff, we'll get to a lot of feeding, and we'll keep working on the things we didn't do well this weekend."
The Falcons now prepare to play the next three matches on the road, beginning with a contest at Michigan State University next Sunday (Feb. 1). First serve for that match is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Then, after matches against Marquette (Feb. 6) and Wisconsin (Feb. 7), BGSU will return to the PTC to take on Cleveland State (Feb. 13) and Cincinnati (Feb. 14).
