Mt. Pleasant, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon. This is the Falcons' third game this season decided in extra time.
Despite the loss, Lauren Cadel has now completed two straight games with double-digit saves, and her third double-digit save performance of the season.
With 11 saves in the match today, Cadel moved into sole possession of third-place on BGSU's all-time save list with 345 career saves on the pitch.
"I was pleased with our response today after the Toledo loss where I didn't feel we competed," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We played great soccer but fell victim to a team that wanted to win more than we did today. Not to make an excuse, but this is where we're at as a young program. Our players are still learning how to manage the expectations and pressures that come from needing to earn results in conference play."
In the 98th minute of overtime, CMU's Kaelyn Korte capitalized on a shot 12 yards out from the right wing to win it for Central Michigan. The assist on the game-winner was given to Madison Pogarch.
Morgan Abbitt had a chance to put the game away just 52 seconds into overtime, but her shot was blocked by the CMU defense. Two minutes later, Haley Parkinson's shot off a Rachel Winter's corner kick was saved by Central Michigan's Zoie Reed.
The loss drops BGSU to 6-7-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the Mid-American Conference, while the win moves Central Michigan to 4-7-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the MAC.
The Falcons and Chippewas played to a 0-0 draw in the first half, despite a fairly one-sided opening 45 minutes in favor of CMU. Central Michigan recorded 15 first-half shots, which is the most allowed in a first-half this season for BGSU.
The Bowling Green defense was tested early and often, as the Chippewas fired off three shots in the opening nine minutes and then another five in a five-minute span midway through the first period.
One of CMU's two shots in the 19th minute hit the post, and a free kick off a Falcons' yellow card hit the crossbar a minute later.
Thirty seconds prior to the Chippewas' shot that hit the post, Madison Schupbach recorded BGSU's lone shot on goal in the first half in the 19th minute, but Central Michigan's goalkeeper tallied a save on the play.
CMU took advantage of BGSU's struggle to generate much of an offensive attack and continued to fire off shots at the Falcon backline and Cadel. In the 44th minute, a shot by CMU's Shannon Magnan hit the post and teammate Mary Carlson's rebound shot went wide to keep the game scoreless heading into the half.
Cadel tallied five saves in the opening period and the Falcons were credited with one team save.
BGSU continued to fight, and in the 61st minute, Parkinson ripped a shot at the CMU 'keeper who made the save.
Neither team was able to maintain possession long enough to record a shot over a seven-minute stretch ranging from the 62nd minute to the 69th, but that streak was snapped when Cadel saved a shot by CMU's Samantha Maher in the 70th minute.
Despite being outshot, the Falcons remained determined, and with just four minutes to play in regulation, Madison Schupbach attempted her third shot of the game, but the shot was too high. Two minutes later, Parkinson launched one of her own into the hands of Reed. That would be the final shot for either team in regulation before heading into overtime.
The match featured a total of 29 Central Michigan shots to Bowling Green's 11. Schupbach and Parkinson finished the match with three shots each. Erica Hubert added two and Alexa Cheripko and Abbitt recorded one a piece.
"At the end of the day, players need to make plays and I thought we did well in the back two thirds of the game, but needed to be more clinical around goal," added Basalyga.
The Falcons remain on the road next weekend as they prepare for matchups with Kent State on Oct. 16 and Ohio on Oct. 18.
