Kent, Ohio – Juli Knapp and Skylar Fleak connected on a goal early in the first half against Kent State Friday afternoon, however, the Falcons gave up four unanswered goals to fall to the Golden Flashes 4-1 on the road.
Â
The header goal, Fleak's third score of the season, was sent into the top right corner of the net at the 10:32 mark to take a 1-0 early lead against Kent State.
Â
With the loss, BGSU falls to 6-8-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the MAC. Kent State improves to 8-5-2 and 4-3-0 in the conference.
"Today's result was a by product of our youth," said head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We are relying on freshmen and sophomores to win us games that's not our players' faults. I thought we came out really strong, but we didn't do as good of a job weathering the pressure Kent put on us through certain waves of the game, and they capitalized."
Â
The score was the Falcons' quickest goal in MAC play this season and fastest in a game since Findlay on Sept. 8 when Erica Hubert scored in the ninth minute.
Â
BGSU had another scoring opportunity in the 15th minute, but Hubert was unable to capitalize on her shot from the middle of a crowded box. Jip Van Haaster launched a shot wide of the goal in the 42nd minute for the Falcons' third and final shot of the half.
Â
The Golden Flashes tied the game at one a piece in the 35th minute on an unassisted goal by Jaime Eiben. Kent State then pulled ahead on a goal in the 43rd minute to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Â
Lauren Cadel recorded seven saves and allowed two goals in the opening period.
Â
Kent State secured the win with two second-half goals in the 46th and 52nd minutes to advance its lead over the Falcons to 4-1.
Â
Goalkeeper Alexis Smith entered the match for Cadel in the 65th minute and faced five shots during her time between the posts.
Â
Trying to chip away at the Kent State lead, Laura Bozzelli came off the bench to register a shot in the 78th minute, but it was saved by the Golden Flashes keeper.
"I'm really proud of the way we continued to battle through the second half of the game. We've put some pressure on ourselves as we head into the last four games of the season, but I trust our mentality and know they will continue to compete for a spot in the MAC tournament," added Basalyga.
Bowling Green was outshot 23-4 in the 90-minute contest.
Â
Next up for the Falcons are the Ohio University Bobcats Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ohio.
