BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program kicked off their 2015-16 season on Friday afternoon at Cooper Pool, competing in the Orange and Brown Intrasquad Meet. Under first-year head coach Matt Ense, the Orange team defeated the Brown team 182-131 in the meet.
"It was great to see the team compete for the first time under the lights," Ense said. "I saw some really impressive swims for it being so early in the season and we also saw a lot of things that we will need to focus on and work on to be better the next time we compete."
There were several impressive swims throughout the Intrasquad Meet, as five new meet records were set on Friday. Records fell in the 200 free, 100 breast, 200 fly, 100 free and 100 fly.
Victoria Griffin set the first meet record on the day, as she swam the 200 free in a winning time of 1:51.80 for the Orange team. Daniela Carrillo then set another meet record in the fifth event of the day – the 100 meter breaststroke – in a time of 1:04.12 for the Brown team. In the very next event, senior Jordan Bullock set a meet record in the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.80. Griffin set another meet record later in the meet, swimming the 100 free in a time of 51.31 to take home another first place finish for the Orange. The final meet record was set in the 100 fly – Bullock's second of the day – swimming a winning time of 57.94.
Freshman diver Claire Stam won both the 3-meter and 1-meter events for the brown team during Friday's meet, while also taking home a win in the thrilling 50-meter freestyle swim during the "divers" flight. Joining Stam as winners for the brown team were junior Maya Skorupski, Carrillo – a senior, and sophomore Natalie Criswell.
Skorupski was victorious in the 100 backstroke, winning in a time of 56.86 while Carillo won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Criswell won the 500 free in a time of 5:13.79.
On the Orange Team, Griffin – a junior – led the way with victories in three individual events and one relay event. She was joined by Bullock (two individual wins, two relay wins), senior Kayla Effinger and sophomore Franziska Wohlert as winners for their team.
The Orange Team got their first win of the day in the 200 Medley relay, as a team of Maria Galic, Christin Swanepoel, Bullock and Sadie Ahlers came out on top. In the only other relay of the meet – the 400 free relay – the Orange Team comprised of Galic, Griffin, Hannah Newman and Wohlert came out on top.
Griffin was victorious in the 100 and 200 freestyle events, while also taking first place in the 100 IM. Bullock won both the 100 and 200 fly races, while Wohlert also won two events – the 200 back and 200 IM. Effinger got the final win of the day for the Orange Team, coming out victorious in the 50 free.
The team will now turn their attention to the beginning of the competitive season, which will start on Friday, Oct. 16 with the Tom Stubbs Relays at Cooper Pool. The following day, the Falcons will host their annual Alumni Meet, where former swimmers and divers – both men's and women's – are invited back for a fun, competitive meet and to reconnect with old classmates, teammates, and Falcons for BGSU's Homecoming Weekend.
