BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball Orange and Brown World Series was just three outs away from being over, before team Brown scored four runs in the final frame to secure an 8-8 tie. Orange, who has won Games 1 and 2, will look to win the series on Friday. If Brown wins Game 5, which would give both teams two wins and a tie, the coaches will come up with a separate tiebreaker to determine the series winner. Today's ballgame lasted six innings.
Justin Mott led off the bottom of the sixth with his third single of the contest, sparking the four-run rally. After the first out of the frame, Addison Rospert, Mitchell Schneider and Joe McGuinness hit back-to-back-to-back doubles, scoring two runs in total.
Nate Rau then scored a run with a groundout. Volunteer assistant Jeremy Shay – who played third base in the game, making a pair of nice plays while drawing a pair of walks – stepped up to the plate with Brown one out from elimination. During the at-bat, a wild pitch plated McGuinness to knot the game at 8-8.
The ballgame looked like it was over about an inning earlier, when Orange scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead. After an R.J. Williams leadoff walk, Dan Ferguson recorded one of his two hits in the game. Derek Drewes then moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Kory Brown kept the inning alive with an infield single that loaded the bases, and after Riley Minorik drew a walk to bring home a run, Greg Basalyga plated two more with a single up the box. Hunter Clanin, who hit a two-run home run one inning earlier to give Orange a 3-1 lead, registered his third RBI of the contest with a single into centerfield.
Brown did not give up, however, scoring three runs the next frame to get right back into the game. Blake Jenkins singled with the bases loaded, bringing home two runs. Matt Smith quickly followed with an RBI groundout.
Orange tacked on what would be a massive insurance run in the top of the sixth, when Ferguson singled home Williams.
Zac Carey started for Orange, working a clean first. He was relieved by C.J. Schildt, who pitched into the fifth inning before exiting with a 7-1 lead.
Devin Daugherty – who struck out his brother, Cam Daugherty, en route to a perfect first – give Brown a solid 2.2 innings, surrendering just one run. Kory Brown tagged him with a two-out double in the third that tied the game at 1-1.
The half inning prior, Rospert gave Brown a 1-0 advantage with an RBI groundout that scored Mott, who led off the inning with a single before stealing second.
Game 5 will be played on Friday, Oct. 23. The ballgame from Steller Field is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. Fans can view a photo gallery from today's game by clicking the above link. Recaps (with photos) from the previous three games can be found by clicking on the links below.
