BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team and head coach Danny Schmitz have announced that junior Greg Basalyga, and seniors Kory Brown, Devin Daugherty and Matt Smith will serve as captains for the 2016 season.
Brown, a senior outfielder from Sparta, Mich., started 51 games in his first season for the Falcons after transferring from Muskegon Community College. Brown, who was Bowling Green's primary centerfielder and leadoff batter last season, will be a captain for the second straight season. Brown hit .293 last season, and owned a .394 on-base percentage. He scored 40 runs and registered 23 RBI, while also swiping 18 bases and drawing 21 walks. Brown was named BGSU's Junior Scholar Athlete of the Year at the annual Ziggy's Award Show, which features all student-athletes from Bowling Green's 18 varsity sports.
COACH SCHMITZ ON BROWN: "Kory made an immediate impact on our program last year, anchoring centerfield and hitting leadoff. He helped spark our offense with his aggressive play. Kory received a perfect 4.0 GPA in both the fall and spring semesters. When you see the words student-athlete at BGSU, you will see Kory's photo next to it – he is the total package."
Daugherty, a senior right-handed pitcher from Wooster, Ohio, has made 52 career appearances. Daugherty made a career-high and team-high 23 appearances in 2015 – all from out of the bullpen. The right-hander logged 41.2 innings last season, striking out 26 batters while issuing 13 walks. Daugherty went 3-1, and over his final eight appearances of the season, he surrendered just one earned run (0.51 ERA). Daugherty picked up the win in the 2015 season-opener at SEMO. In the MAC Tournament opener against Ohio, he threw five innings, allowing just one hit and no runs.
COACH SCHMITZ ON DAUGHERTY: "Devin is one of our work horses from out of the bullpen. He's a great competitor, tremendous athlete and solid student. He leads by example on the field, off the field and in the classroom. Devin is well respected by his teammates, coaches and support staff. We look forward to Devin helping lead our pitching staff in 2016."
Smith, a senior outfielder from Johnstown, Ohio, played in all 54 games in 2015. Playing mostly in left field, Smith had a career year and was named second team All-MAC. He set career highs in virtually every statistic, hitting .310 with 38 RBI, three home runs and 32 runs scored. Batting in the four-hole for most of the season, he led the team with 17 multi-hit games, while also registering 11 multi-RBI ballgames. Smith, who hit a walk-off home run against Buffalo that clinched the Falcons a spot in the MAC Tournament, batted .398 in MAC play to lead the conference. Smith finished the year with a .369 on-base percentage.
COACH SCHMITZ ON SMITH: "Matt had a breakout year in 2015, and being one of the hardest workers on the team has made him into the player we knew he could be. Matt's work habits are second-to-none. Matt and Greg Basalyga are the first to practice, and the last to leave. Matt has the respect of his teammates, as well as the coaches. We look forward to him helping lead our 2016 Falcon baseball team. He is an outstanding student who does things the right way."
Basalyga, a junior infielder from Pickerington, Ohio, had a big sophomore season and played in 53 of 54 games in 2015. Basalyga finished tied for first on the team with five home runs, and finished second in slugging percentage (.446). Basalyga, who was named to the Academic All-MAC team, finished the year 12 multi-hit games and 10 multi-RBI games.
COACH SCHMITZ ON BASALYGA: "Greg had a solid year last season for our baseball program. He has great leadership qualities, and his work habits are even better. He is a tireless worker, and he's always striving to be the best that be can be. He is a great student, and always does things the right way. We are excited that Greg will lead by example, and help guide the team in 2016."
