Cecil, Glowniak, Thompson & Uecker to join BGSU in 2016-17 academic year
Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Jennifer Roos has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Andrea Cecil (Oak Harbor, Ohio), Clare Glowniak (Corunna, Mich.), Rion Thompson (Lima, Ohio) and Jane Uecker (Akron, Ohio) will join the Falcon program for the 2015-16 academic year.
"Signing day is a day that student-athletes, families, coaches and fans look forward to every year," said Roos. "But, the recruiting process begins years earlier at the evaluation level. We are very pleased to add four signees and their families to the BGSU community.
"I have to thank our staff for working diligently to compile a recruiting class of young women who represent our beliefs at Bowling Green. During the recruiting process, all four student-athletes have committed themselves to being successful in the areas that we evaluate heavily. They have demonstrated success in being responsible academically, socially and athletically.
"In addition, all have received some of the best prep coaching available. Lastly, not only does this group bring significant height to our roster, but this group will complement each other very well, and I expect them to develop a special bond as a class."
Cecil, a 6-1 wing, is currently in her senior year at Oak Harbor H.S., under Coach Tom Kontak. She earned All-Ohio Special Mention as a junior after being named to the all-state third-team in her sophomore season. As a junior, Cecil averaged 19.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the Rockets, earning All-District First-Team honors from both the Associated Press and the district coaches for the second consecutive year. She averaged 19.5 points and 7.6 boards per game as a sophomore. Cecil earned All-SBC honorable mention as a freshman before being named to the all-league first team in each of the next two years. Entering her senior season, she owns the school records for points in a game (40), season (510) and career (1,281). She was named a top-15 prospect in the state of Ohio's Class of 2016 by Tom Jenkins Ohio Girls Basketball Report. She has played AAU ball for the Toledo Thunder under Coach Kechan Johnson. Cecil also has competed on the track team at Oak Harbor, and qualified for regionals in multiple events last spring.
"Andrea is one of the most highly touted players in her position to come out of Northwest Ohio, and she has the ability to score in a myriad of ways," said Roos. "Falcon fans have known about her for several years, and now they will get to see her compete in the Stroh Center. She is a multi-sport athlete and has achieved multiple school records in basketball at Oak Harbor. She has played for positive role models as coaches and learned the fundamentals of the game from them."
Glowniak, a 6-2 post player, is in her senior year at Flushing H.S. under Coach Larry Ford. Last season, she led the Raiders to a 24-1 record, a district title and a trip to the regional final. A starter in each of her first three seasons, Glowniak, a three-year starter, was an Associated Press Class A All-Michigan First-Team selection last season, and also was named to the Academic All-State team. She averaged 11.8 points and 5.2 rebounds a year ago, shooting 52.2 percent from the field. Glowniak paced her team to district championships in each of the last three seasons, helping the Raiders compile an overall record of 50-21 during that time. Glowniak is the 13th-rated prospect – and the fourth-rated post player – in the state of Michigan's Class of 2016, according to LBI Insider. In the classroom, she is a 4.0 student. She has played AAU ball for Michigan's Finest, under Coach Rob DeCook.
"Clare has received fantastic coaching at the high school and AAU levels, and her game has grown every year," said Roos. "She has an uncanny ability to run the floor and score in transition, and also has the ability to be a physical post defender. Her strong work ethic coupled with a positive attitude make Clare a great fit for our program."
Thompson, a 5-10 combo guard, is a senior at Lima Senior H.S., playing for Coach Vincent Halliday. Last season, she earned All-Ohio Second-Team accolades, averaging 21.3 points along with five rebounds and two assists per game for the Spartans. She was named to the All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference First Team, and was the TRAC Player of the Year. Thompson was named to the All-District First Team for the second-straight year. As a sophomore, she led the TRAC in scoring – a feat she would duplicate as a junior – en route to all-league first-team and all-district second-team honors. Thompson averaged 21.2 points in her sophomore season, and earned all-state honorable mention. As a freshman, she had 10 points and six boards per game, earning all-league honorable mention. She helped the Spartans to sectional championships in each of her first two years. Thompson is a top-25 Ohio Class of 2016 prospect by Tom Jenkins Ohio Girls Basketball Report. Thompson has played AAU ball for the Toledo Thunder under Coach Kechan Johnson.
"Rion is one of the top-scoring guards in the state of Ohio," said Roos. "She has the ability to score beyond the arc and in the lane, and can be a true playmaker in our system. She has gained a lot of knowledge from all of her coaches throughout her career. Rion has a strong drive to be successful in every aspect of her game and wants to be pushed to be the best she can be."
Uecker, a 6-2 post player, is a senior at St. Vincent-St. Mary H.S. for Coach Carley Whitney, a storied program that has produced several collegiate women's basketball student-athletes. She averaged 9.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocked shots per game for the Irish last season, en route to All-Tri County First Team honors. The team won 14 games and advanced to the district semifinals. Uecker was named to the Northeast Inland All-District Second Team last year, and earned All-Ohio honorable mention in Division II. Additionally, she was rated the 10th-best post player in the state of Ohio. She has played AAU ball for Score More Athletic Club (SMAC), coached by Tucker Neale. Uecker is both a peer and Eucharistic minister.
"Jane is one of the most versatile post players in Ohio with the ability to score outside and inside," said Roos. "She will excel in our ball-screen offense. She has played for multiple coaches with different styles and has become an extremely intelligent basketball player. Â Jane's best basketball is ahead of her, and I am happy that it will happen in a Bowling Green uniform."
The Falcons have 14 student-athletes, including three seniors – Erica Donovan, Miriam Justinger and Lauren Tibbs – on the 2015-16 roster. BGSU opened the '15-16 regular season on Friday night (Nov. 13), with a 70-52 win over Illinois State. The Falcons host Bradley University on Sunday (Nov. 15), with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
