PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program completed day one action at the Pittsburgh Invitational on Friday, turning in several strong results throughout the day. The morning preliminaries throughout the weekend are being conducted in long course format to provide opportunities to post official times in the format used for the upcoming Rio Olympic Games in the summer of 2016. The finals each evening are being swum in short course format.
"The team had some really solid races on day one, highlighted by a win from Franziska Wohlert in the 200 IM along with placing four Falcons in the top eight," Matt Ense said. "To end the evening with such a strong performance from our 400 Medley Relay teams was also a positive. The A relay finished a second off the school record and Elodie Schreiber led off the C relay team with the eighth fastest time in school history."
Â
The top result of the day came in the 200 individual medley finals, as four Falcons swam in the A flight final. Of the four, Franziska Wohlert took home a first place finish with a season-best time of 2:03.19. She was followed at the finish line by teammates Daniela Carrillo (fourth), Emily Verbrugge (fifth) and Kristin Filby (eighth).
Â
In the 500 free event, two Falcons swam career-bests in the A flight final. Hannah Newman finished sixth with a time of 4:59.50 while Natalie Criswell finished seventh in a time of 5:01.05. Tara Capouch finished third in the B flight final in the event, while a pair of freshman – Mary Edwards and Megan Larson – finished first and second in the C flight finals.
Â
Swimming against several strong opponents this weekend, including the hosts Pittsburgh of the Atlantic Coast Conference, just one Falcon swimmer qualified for the A final in the 50 free. Victoria Griffin swam a season-best time of 23.31 in the event to finish third. It was the fastest 50 free time by a BGSU swimmer this season.
Â
In both relays, which marked the first time this season the Falcons have competed in each event, the Orange and Brown took home second place. The 200 Free Relay team consisted of Griffin, Kayla Effinger, Newman and Maria Galic, while the 400 Medley Relay team was made up of Maya Skorupski, Carrillo, Jordan Bullock and Griffin.
The Falcons will continue competition at the Pittsburgh Invitational on Saturday. Action gets underway at 9:00 am with LCM prelim events, while the finals begin at 5:00 pm at UP's Trees Pool.
