Senior Lauren Tibbs led a balanced BGSU attack with 11 points and nine rebounds. Fellow senior Erica Donovan and sophomore Rachel Myers scored 10 points apiece, while freshman Sydney Lambert scored nine.
Donovan had six rebounds and Lambert five as the Falcons held a 43-32 advantage on the boards.
Ana Owens led three double-digit scorers with a game-high 15 points for UC. Alyesha Lovett added 13 points, while Jasmine Whitfield scored 12.
In addition to outrebounding the Bearcats by 11, the Falcons had advantages of 24-20 in points in the paint and 18-8 in second-chance points. And, despite turning the ball over 19 times to UC's 14, the Brown and Orange actually had a 14-5 edge in points off turnovers.
But, the home team took the lead for good when Lovett grabbed an offensive rebound and laid the ball in with 8:38 to go in the fourth quarter. That bucket began a 7-0 UC run. The Falcons got as close as two points, but could draw no closer.
The lead changed hands several times in the first two minutes of the game. Bianca Quisenberry hit a jumper just 11 seconds in for the hosts, but Donovan banked home a three-point try at the shot-clock buzzer. Quisenberry was fouled on a drive and hit two free throws to give the hosts a 4-3 lead with just over a minute gone. But, the Falcons then proceeded to score the game's next nine points.
That 9-0 run began when Donovan was fouled and hit a free throw. Her second charity toss would not drop, but Tibbs grabbed the rebound and put the ball back up and in for a 6-4 BG lead. Then, senior Miriam Justinger came up with a steal, went coast-to-coast and was fouled as she hit a layup. Justinger's free throw gave the Falcons a five-point advantage.
Moments later, Tibbs kicked the ball out to Myers in the right corner, and the sophomore's three-point try found nothing but net, giving BG a 12-4 lead. Owens countered with a jumper, but Lambert's pull-up J restored the Falcons' eight-point lead. Owens hit a three-pointer, but Lambert took a pass from redshirt sophomore Kennedy Kirkpatrick and knocked down a three-ball of her own. The Brown and Orange had a 17-9 advantage with just over four minutes left in the period.
The Bearcats, however, held BG scoreless over the remainder of the quarter, and a Whitfield three was followed by a steal and layup from Lovett. The Falcons' lead was 17-14 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw the Falcons score five-straight points to go ahead by eight once again. Tibbs took an entry pass from sophomore Haley Puk and knocked down a one-hander, and a Lambert steal gave the ball back to BG. Carly Santoro missed a layup, but the freshman rebounded her own miss and knocked down her second layup try. Then, Lambert was fouled and split a pair of free throws for a 22-14 lead.
Chelsea Warren's putback ended BG's 5-0 run, but a third-chance basket by Tibbs put BG ahead by eight yet again.
Back came the Bearcats, as an Owens three-pointer and a layup by Shelbi Chandler cut BG's lead to just three. But, Myers took a pass from junior Abby Siefker in transition, and the sophomore knocked down a pull-up jumper. Then, Santoro's putback in traffic made it a 28-21 game with just over two minutes on the clock.
The BG lead was six points after a pair of Siefker free throws with 54.6 seconds left in the half, but the Bearcats sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a Donovan putback. The second triple in that stretch, by Whitfield, came in the final seconds of the period, and cut BG's lead to 32-30 at the intermission.
And, when the third quarter started, it didn't take long for the hosts to tie the game, as Chandler hit a layup with just 13 seconds gone. Donovan came up with a steal, was fouled and hit a pair of charity tosses with just over a minute gone, and Myers hit a nifty hanging floater in the paint with the shot clock winding down. But, on each occasion, Owens scored to tie the game for the 'Cats.
Out of a media timeout, however, Myers took Lambert's inbounds pass and drained a corner three. The hosts saw Whitfield whistled for her fourth foul of the game wtih 6:36 left in the period, and she soon checked out of the game.
Three Bearcat free throws tied the score midway through the quarter, but Tibbs took a pass from Myers and knocked down a triple try for a 42-39 lead. Owens answered with a jumper, but Quisenberry was called for her third, then her fourth, foul of the game.
Quisenberry remained in the contest for another minute or so, and her free throws with 1:35 on the clock were the only points by either team over the last four-plus minutes of the period. Justinger and the BGSU defense forced Owens to take and off-balance jumper as the third-period horn sounded, and the shot was off the mark, but the hosts led by a 43-42 score.
The fourth quarter saw Lovett score on a putback with 30 seconds gone, but junior Ashley Tunstall kicked the ball out to Lambert for a three-pointer from the right elbow, and the game was tied, 45-45, with 8:56 to go. But, Lovett got another offensive rebound and bucket on the next UC possession, giving the hosts the lead for good.
That layup began a 7-0 run for UC, giving the home team its largest lead of the game. Lovett hit a contested banker at the 7:54 mark, and after a questionable offensive-foul call on Tibbs, Whitfield threw the ball toward the basket, and it somehow went in as a foul was whistled on the Falcons. Whitfield's free throw completed the three-point play and gave the 'Cats a 52-45 lead with 6:44 remaining. BG would hold UC to just two points over that final 6:44, but the Falcons were unable to catch up.
It certainly wasn't for lack of trying, though. With the shot-clock winding down, Puk slashed through the land and hit a jump-stop layup with 5:41 to go, cutting the BG deficit to five. Lovett split a pair of free throws just under a minute later, but Myers drove the left baseline and fed Tibbs for a layup, and UC's lead was 53-49.
Lovett was called for an offensive foul with 3:15 to go, and BG's next possession saw both Lambert and Donovan get offensive rebounds. Donovan's rebound was followed by a layup in traffic, and BG was down by just two points, 53-51.
The Bearcats used all of the shot clock on the next possession, but Whitfield's three-point try bounced around and out, and Tibbs came up with the rebound. On the ensuing possession, Justinger was fouled out top with just two seconds remaining on the shot clock, giving the Falcons a fresh 30 seconds with which to work But, Justinger's layup try would not drop as she was knocked to the ground under the hoop.
BG forced a UC miss, but Lambert's contested three-point try at the shot-clock horn would not go down. Justinger grabbed the rebound with several UC players around, and the senior tried to flip the ball to a teammate as she was falling, but Lovett grabbed the ball as she went to the floor as well, and the Bearcats called a timeout with 42 seconds to go.
Late in the next possession, Lovett missed a shot, but the ball went out of bounds to UC. Justinger fouled Lovett after the inbounds pass, and Lovett split a pair of tosses, giving the Bearcats a three-point lead with 12.0 seconds remaining, and a Tibbs shot in the final seconds of the game was off the mark. Brandey Tarver grabbed the rebound as the horn sounded, sparking a wild UC celebration.
The Falcons and Bearcats each made 19 field goals on the day, and each team connected on six three-point tries. Both Myers and Lambert hit a pair of long-range shots for the visitors. BG held UC to an 0-of-5 long-distance effort in the second half.
The Brown and Orange had 17 offensive rebounds in the game, with Tibbs coming up with four and Lambert three. Lambert is a native of Cincinnati, while Tibbs is from nearby Taylor Mill, Ky.
The Falcons will return to action next weekend, playing a pair of neutral-site contests in Wilmington, N.C. The Brown and Orange will face Davidson College on Friday (Nov. 27) before meeting Jacksonville University the following day (Nov. 28.
