AKRON, Ohio – With Olympic Trials coming up next summer, the Bowling Green State University swimming and diving program swam in a long course dual meet at University of Akron on Monday afternoon. The meet was designed to give swimmers an opportunity to qualify for USA Olympic Trials next summer. One Falcon swimmer did just that, as Victoria Griffin punched her ticket to next summer's event in Omaha, Neb.
Â
"Today half of the team competed in a long course meet with Akron," head coach Matt Ense said. "Coach Brian Peresie came up with the idea to do a long course meet after our invitational this weekend, which simulated the long course invite we will be hosting at BGSU the day after MAC Championships."
Â
Several Falcon swimmers put up impressive times throughout the meet, just missing marks to qualify. Kristin Filby missed the 100 breast mark by just .13 seconds, finishing with a time of 1:11.62, while Maya Skorupski swam a 1:04.02 in the 100 back, just missing the cut time of 1:03.39.
Â
The story of the day was Griffin, a junior from Littlestown, Pa. On the last swim of the first session, she swam a 26.21 in the 50 free to just miss the cut mark of 26.19. But, she had the chance for redemption just 30 minutes later and put up a 26.00 to punch her ticket to next summer's USA Olympic Trials.
Â
"We had tremendous success today coming off of the invite," Ense continued. "The atmosphere was fun and relaxed, as both teams supported each other throughout the meet. It was really neat to see both teams cheering each other on. As a team, we swam some lifetime best times and had some near misses, but I am really proud of the entire team for their effort to finish the weekend off strong."
