SCOUTING THE MIAMI REDHAWKS
Miami ended a three-game skid on Saturday with a 77-66 home win over the Ohio Bobcats at Millett Hall to move to 9-16 overall and 4-8 in the MAC. The Redhawks, who have won just three out of their last 10 games, are just 1-8 in true road games this season and 1-10 overall when playing in arenas/gymnasiums outside of Millett Hall. MU is led by transfer Eric Washington who is ranked 10th in the MAC in scoring at 14.2 points per game. Geovonie McKnight and Will Sullivan are also both averaging over 10 points per game for the Redhawks this season. Miami is efficient on the offensive end, as the Redhawks rank fourth in the MAC in field goal percentage at 45 percent on the season. Defensively, Miami is third in the MAC in steals, averaging 7.7 per contest.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS MIAMI
The BGSU Falcons are just 52-80 all-time versus the Miami Redhawks. In fact, Miami has won each of the last three meetings between the two schools, including both match ups last year. However, the two teams have split 5-5 overall in each of the last 10 meetings with the Falcons going 4-2 at home during that span.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"We are only two-thirds of the way through the conference slate and a lot of things will happen. We anticipated a bunch of close games this year with our own team and with the majority of the MAC games, and I think that is what you are seeing. There is a ton of parity, but there is a lot of basketball left to be played."
"Miami is a tough match up for us on paper. They press and give you a lot of different defensive looks in the same game. Their offensive numbers are really, really good. They're similar to Northern Illinois in that they get the ball out of the net, get it out of bounds and they race the ball up the floor to try to score before you get your defense set. We've got to get ready for that amongst other things."
WICHITA STATE TIES
The two head coaches in this match up - BGSU head coach Chris Jans and Miami head coach John Cooper - each have ties to Wichita State. BGSU's Coach Jans coached for seven years at Wichita State both as an Associate Head Coach and an Assistant Coach for the Shockers. During his time at Wichita State from 2007-12, Jans helped lead the Shockers six straight appearances in postseason play - the NCAA Tournament from 2012-14, the NIT in 2010-11 and the CBI in 2009. Miami's Coach Cooper played collegiately at Wichita State under Coach Fogler and led the Shockers in scoring and rebounding during both his junior and senior seasons. Cooper was a two-time team captain and a Rhodes Scholar candidate that graduated with a degree in business administration from Wichita State in 1991.
BACK TO THE MAC EAST
Eight of the Falcons' last nine games have come against the MAC West Division. The game versus Miami on Wednesday night will be the first MAC East game for the Falcons since Jan. 31.
IT'S ALL UP FOR GRABS DOWN THE HOME STRETCH
Wednesday night's #MACtion will tip-off the final third of the MAC season with all 12 teams still with six conference games left to play before the 2015 MAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament beginning on March 9. A total of five teams are within one game of each other for the top spot in the MAC, while three other teams are within a game of each other and just two games back of four teams all tied for second-place overall.
A WIN WOULD ...
* Give the Falcons an 18-6 record overall on the season, the most wins since 19 in 2008-09.
* Put BGSU at 10-3 in Mid-American Conference play, the most MAC wins since 11 in 2008-09.
* Put the Falcons at 11-2 overall at home in the Stroh Center on the year.
* Push BGSU's current winning streak to five straight games, a season-high and the most consecutive wins by a Falcons' team since winning six in a row back in 2008-09.
* Place BGSU at 5-0 overall for the month of February.
* Snap Miami's winning streak over the Falcons at three games.
STREAKING FALCONS
BGSU enter's Wednesday night's contest on a four-game winning streak overall. The Falcons have posted a season-high four-game winning streak three times this season and a total of six four-game winning streaks since 2008-09. However, the last time BGSU won more than four straight games was when the Falcons posted a six-game winning streak back in 2008-09.
MAKE IT FOUR FOR HOLMES
Senior Richaun Holmes was tabbed the Mid-American Conference (MAC) East Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Feb. 16, his fourth MAC weekly award this season. The 6-8 forward also earned the award on Dec. 1, Dec. 29, and then again on Jan. 12. Holmes posted double digit points in both games last week to give him 12 straight games with double figures and help the Falcons go 2-0 overall. Holmes scored 12 points, pulled down six rebounds and turned away four shots in a 65-49 home win over Western Michigan on Wednesday night, Feb. 10. He followed that up with a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks in the Falcons' 79-65 road win at Ball State on Saturday, Feb. 14. Overall for the week, the forward averaged 16.0 points on 61.9 percent shooting overall, including going a percent 2-for-2 behind the three-point line and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. He also averaged 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and increased his MAC leading blocked shots total to 61 on the season
SUPER 17 AND COUNTING
BGSU's 17 wins this season is already more wins than the Falcons had all of last year (12-20) and are the most wins for the Falcons in a single season since posting 19 victories overall in 2011-12. In fact, the Falcons have posted more than 17 wins on the season only two times over the last 10 years (2004-05: (18-11); 2008-09: (19-14)).
DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!
The Falcons have been solid on the defensive end this season, as BGSU ranks 23rd in the nation overall in scoring defense at 59.4 points per game allowed and 56th nationally in field goal percentage defense at 39.9 percent on the year. BGSU is also ranked in the top-five in the MAC in scoring defense (1st/59.4 ppg), three-point field goal defense (1st/29.8%) and field goal percentage defense (2nd/39.9%). In fact, Bowling Green's Richaun Holmes leads the league in blocked shots with 61, an average of 2.7 per game, while Zack Denny leads the MAC in steals with an average of 2.0 swipes per contest and 45 on the season.
SUB!!!!!!!!!!!
Coach Jans has proven early that he is not afraid to go to his bench, as 15 different players have already seen time on the floor for the Falcons this season, while eight different players are averaging 16 minutes or more of playing time per game this season. In fact, the Falcons have outscored their opponents by 198 points (542-344) in bench points this year, an average of 23.6 points per game off the bench compared to their opponents 15.0 bench points per outing.
STROLL DOWN THE MAC MEMORY LANE
Last season in 2013-14, the Falcons posted a 6-12 record in the MAC and finished sixth in the East Division. Since winning the MAC East in 2008-09 with an 11-5 conference record, the Falcons have been over .500 in MAC play just once, going 9-7 overall in league play in 2011-12, coming into this season. Over the last five seasons, since 2009-10 and prior to this season, Bowling Green went just 36-46 in MAC play. This year the Falcons are 9-3 in MAC play.
OVER/UNDER ON 60
This season, the benchmark in points has been the number 60. The Falcons are 14-3 overall when they score 60 or more points for the contest and just 3-3 when they score less than 60 points. On the flip side, BGSU is 11-1 on the season when holding its opponents to less than 60 points and just 6-5 when surrendering more than 60 points in the game to its foe.
40/40
Bowling Green has posted an overall record of 14-2 on the season when shooting over 40 percent overall from the floor as a team. The Falcons are also 11-1 in games this season when holding its opponent to less than 40 percent shooting for the game.
50 PERCENT SHOOTING = WIN
BGSU has shot 50 percent or better from the floor as a team this season in five different games. The Falcons shot 51.8 percent at Drake on Nov. 15, 50.0 percent vs. Alabama A&M on Dec. 6, 50.0 percent on the road at USF on Dec. 28, 52.8 percent at Central Michigan on Feb. 4, and most recently 50.9 percent at Ball State on Feb. 14. The Falcons are 5-0 this season when shooting 50 percent or better from the field for the game.
HOME SWEET STROH
BGSU has called the Stroh Center home since the 2011-12 season and has posted an overall record of 40-19 at the venue. The Falcons have won seven or more games at home every season since the Stroh's opening for the 2011-12 season and are 10-2 at home thus far this year.
THAT 70'S STROH
BGSU is a perfect 18-0 at the Stroh when scoring 70 points or more in a contest. That means the Falcons have scored 70 or more points in nearly half of their wins in front of the home fans in the Stroh. This season the Falcons have scored 70 or more points at home twice - in a 70-55 win versus Wright State on Nov. 19 and in a 74-58 win over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 21.
FALCONS VERSUS THE MAC WEST IN 2015
BGSU fared well versus the MAC West Division over the regular season slate in cross-divisional match ups. The Falcons went 7-1 versus the West Division this season with two wins each over Ball State and Northern Illinois, as well as at Central Michigan and wins at home versus Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. The Falcons' lone loss to a MAC West team was on the road at Toledo on Jan. 24.
QUARTET OF 600 POINT CAREER SCORERS
The Falcons currently have a quartet of 600 point career scorers on its roster in Richaun Holmes (959), Jehvon Clarke (751), Anthony Henderson (642) and Spencer Parker (607).
HOLMES ZONING IN ON 1,000
Senior Richaun Holmes is zoning in on the 1,000 career points plateau, as the 6-8 forward currently has totaled 959 points over his three years at BGSU. Holmes is only 41 points shy of the career milestone with six games to play in the regular season. He would become just the 42nd player in BGSU's 100 year history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
BGSU UNDEFEATED FOLLOWING A LOSS THIS SEASON
With the Falcons' 76-74 overtime road win over Central Michigan on Feb. 4, head coach Chris Jans' squad improved to 6-0 in games following a loss in their previous contest. After a loss at Western Kentucky (52-62), the Falcons beat up on Alabama A&M (64-47). Following the tough loss at Dayton (52-56), BGSU bounced back to defeat Cleveland State by double digits (67-57). BGSU would then go and upend USF (79-70) after suffering a loss to Ferris State (68-82) at home on Dec. 21, prior to stifling Ball State (58-46) at home on Jan. 17 following a loss at Akron (50-67) just three days before on Jan. 14. A home win over NIU on Jan. 27 came directly after a loss on the road at Toledo (71-67) on Jan. 24, while the CMU (76-74) road win on Feb. 4 followed a home loss to Akron (68-69) on Jan. 31.
COUNT'EM ON ONE HAND
For the first time since the 2006-07 season, the Falcons were able to count the number of turnovers that they committed on one hand with just five total miscues in the 79-65 road win at Ball State on Feb. 14. The last time BGSU coughed up the ball five times or less in a complete game was against Michigan Tech back on Dec. 27, 2006, when the Falcons committed just four turnovers overall for the contest. The five turnovers is also a season-low for BGSU this year.
LIGHT IT UP, UP, UP ... WE'RE ON FIRE!
As a team the Falcons drained a season-high 12 three-pointers in the 79-65 road win at Ball State on Feb. 14. In the game prior to the Ball State win, BGSU hit 10 three-ball's overall in a 65-49 win at home versus Western Michigan. In each of the last two games, the Falcons have hit a total of 22 three-point field goals and have shot 44 percent overall from long distance in the two wins.
PARKER IS MONEY OFF THE BENCH
Since coming off the bench in each of the Falcons' last three games, junior Spencer Parker has posted 42 points, an average of 14.0 points per game, on 59.3 percent shooting. At Northern Illinois on Feb. 7, Parker had a then season-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting for the game in the 69-65 road win. He followed that performance up with a new season-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including going 5-of-5 from long range, in the 65-49 rout of WMU on Feb. 10. Last time out, he scored seven points on 3-of-8 shooting at Ball State in a 79-65 road win on Feb. 14.
FIRST OT WIN IN OVER TWO YEARS
BGSU's 76-74 overtime win on Feb. 4 at Central Michigan not only handed the Chips their first home loss of the season (12-1), but it was also the first overtime win for a Falcons' team since Feb. 2, 2011. The Falcons last overtime win was a 73-70 OT win at NIU during that 2010-11 season.
A SEASON FIRST - FIVE FALCONS IN DOUBLE DIGITS
The Falcons posted a season first on Feb. 4 in the overtime win at Central Michigan, as five different players scored in double digit points for the game. Anthony Henderson (20), Jehvon Clarke (18), Zack Denny (12), Richaun Holmes (10) and Delvin Dickerson (10) all notched 10 points or more in the 76-74 win. The last time BGSU had five players score in double figures in the same game was in a 67-61 road win at Morehead State on Feb. 15, 2013.
WE WILL TAKE THE STAIRS
Bowling Green is 3-0 this season in road games in which the route from the locker room to the court required going either up or down stairs. This includes wins at Detroit, at Kent State and at Central Michigan.
STRONG MONTH OF JANSUARY
The Falcons had a strong month of JANSuary, as BGSU went 6-3 overall for the first month of the year. Coach Jans' squad posted wins over Chicago State, Kent State, Ohio, Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois for the month. Bowling Green is 4-0 to start the month of February with road wins at Central Michigan (Feb. 4) and Northern Illinois (Feb. 7), as well as a home win versus Western Michigan (Feb. 10) and a third road win at Ball State (Feb. 14).
TOP-FIVE CROWD AT THE STROH ON SATURDAY NIGHT, JAN. 31
In the Falcons' 69-68 loss to Akron, BGSU and the Zips played in front of a crowd of 3,859 fans. The huge crowd is the third largest crowd to watch a BGSU men's basketball game in the Stroh Center's four year history.
AN ANOMALY FOR COACH JANS ON JAN. 31
The MAC loss to Akron on Saturday night, Jan. 31, was the first home conference loss for Coach Chris Jans in nearly two years (23 months). He last experienced a home conference loss on the sidelines as part of the staff at Wichita State back on Feb. 27, 2013 when the Shockers loss at home to Evansville in Missouri Valley Conference play.
RETURN TO SENDER
Falcon senior Richaun Holmes has posted a block in all but three games thus far this season and has totaled a season-high five blocks in four different games this year on his way to a team leading 61 blocks on the year. Holmes totaled a new BGSU school record for the most blocks in a single season last year with 88. In just his first two seasons at BGSU, Holmes became the Falcons' all-time career blocks leader and now has 222 career swats. He currently leads the MAC with 2.7 blocks per game this season.
CHARGE!
BGSU junior Delvin Dickerson seemed to be all over the place in the Falcons' 56-46 home win over NIU on Jan. 27. The forward took not one, not two, not three, but four charges on the NIU offense in the game, which is presumed to be a BGSU record (charges are not an official statistic).
BACK-TO-BACK DOUBLE-DOUBLES FOR DENNY
After posting his first career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 58-46 win over Ball State on Jan. 17, sophomore guard Zack Denny followed with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds in the home rout of Eastern Michigan, 74-58, on Jan. 21. Denny is the first Falcon to post a double-double in two consecutive games since Cameron Black did it on Nov. 26 & 27 of 2013-14 at the Cancun Challenge.
BLOCK NUMBER 200 FOR HOLMES
Senior forward Richaun Holmes tallied his 200th career block in the second half of the Falcons 58-46 win over Ball State on Jan. 17. Holmes, who currently has 222 career swats, is the all-time career blocks leader in BGSU history.
NON-CONFERENCE SEASON IS OVER
BGSU went 8-3 over its 11 non-conference games this season. The eight non-conference victories is the most by a Falcons' team since both the 2009-10 and 2008-09 teams each posted eight non-conference wins on the year.
HOLMES HAULS IN 500TH REBOUND
In the Falcons' 58-35 home win over Chicago State on Saturday night, Jan. 3, senior Richaun Holmes pulled down five rebounds for the game. While that is not a game-high in rebounds for the 6-8 forward, it was enough to give him his 500th career rebound during his time at BGSU.
NEW STROH CENTER RECORDS SET TO START 2015
With BGSU's 32 three-point field goal attempts at home versus Chicago State on Jan. 3, the Falcons set a new Stroh Center record for the most three-point attempts by a BGSU team in a single game in the Stroh Center. The previous record was 26 three-point field goal attempts versus Morehead State on Feb. 18, 2012. The Falcons also set a new record in the fewest points scored by an opponent in the Stroh Center by holding Chicago State to just 35 points for the game, five points less than the previous low of 40 points by Northern Illinois back on Feb. 4, 2012.
MAGIC NUMBER FOR HOLMES IS 26
The magic number for forward Richaun Holmes has proven to be 26 - in that he has posted a career-high 26 points twice this season. Holmes had 26 points versus Ferris State on Dec. 21, but not before he matched his career-high of 26 points on Nov. 30 in a last second win at Detroit. The 6-8 forward first scored his career-high 26 points last season at Xavier.
RECORD SETTING DEFENSIVE EFFORT FOR BGSU
In the Falcons' 58-35 home win over Chicago State, the 35 points allowed by BGSU was the lowest points total allowed by a Falcons' team in a single game since BGSU held Denison to only 34 points in 1981-82. The 35 points scored by Chicago State is also the fewest points scored by a BGSU opponent in the Stroh Center, five points less than the previous low of 40 points by Northern Illinois back on Feb. 4, 2012.
MAKE IT A SERIES SWEEP OF BALL STATE FOR BGSU
Coach Jans' squad made it look easy on Feb. 14, defeating the Ball State Cardinals 79-65 to complete the regular season series sweep of the MAC West Division foe. The Falcons shot 50.9 percent overall, hit a season-high 12 three-pointers, and committed a season-low five turnovers in the wire-to-wire double digit win over the Cardinals. In the two teams' first meeting, BGSU held Ball State to just 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) shooting and forced the Cardinals into 10 turnovers in the second half of play in the 58-46 come from behind win on Jan. 17. The Falcons held Ball State to just 19 points over the final 20 minutes of the contest, while scoring 35 points of their own in the home MAC win.
FALCONS CORRAL BRONCOS IN HUGE DOUBLE DIGIT WIN
The Falcons' defense held Western Michigan to its lowest scoring output of the season in a 65-49 home win at the Stroh Center on Feb. 10. BGSU held the Broncos to just 17 made field goals on 34 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers for the game. Off those 17 turnovers, the Falcons scored 27 points, as BGSU shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) overall and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from behind the three-point line in the win.
BGSU COMPLETES SWEEP OF THE NIU HUSKIES
Bowling Green overcame a 10-0 first half deficit to outscore Northern Illinois 41-34 in the second half to post a 69-65 road win over the Huskies on Feb. 7. The Falcons, who shot 56.5 percent in the second half of play, opened up the second half with an 8-0 run to take the lead from the Huskies en route to the win. The win was the second on the season over NIU, as BGSU held the Huskies to only 46 points in a 56-46 home win less than two weeks earlier on Jan. 27 at the Stroh.
FALCONS SHOOT DOWN THE CHIPS OF CMU
Bowling Green shot a season-high 52.8 percent from the field overall to shoot down the MAC's leading offensive team in the CMU Chippewas in a 76-74 overtime win on Feb. 4. The Falcons, who also shot 42.1 percent from behind the three-point line and 75 percent from the charity stripe for the game, had a season-high five different players score in double figures in the win. The 76 points are the third most points scored by the Falcons in a single game this season - 79 at USF on Dec. 28 and 77 at Drake on Nov. 15 - all of which were road wins for Coach Jans' squad.
LAST SECOND SHOT FALLS SHORT IN ONE-POINT HOME LOSS TO AKRON
The Falcons saw the Zips get an offensive rebound and put back basket with 3.7 seconds left to put the visitors up one. BGSU's last second three-point attempt fell short of the rim, as Akron escaped with a 69-68 win over the Falcons at the Stroh Center. The Falcons led by as much as 14 points, yet struggled to put the game away late as Akron outscored BGSU 16-9 over the final five minutes of the contest.
FALCONS FALL IN THE BATTLE OF I-75 IN FRONT OF 7,392 FANS
The Battle of I-75 rivalry was all it was supposed to be and more on Jan. 24, as the Falcons and Rockets went back-and-forth in a game that saw 17 lead changes, six ties and the contest go down to the final minutes of play. However, the Rockets were able to use late free throws to hold off the Falcons, 71-67. The difference in the contest was at the free throw line, where the Rockets were 17-of-25 (68 percent) compared to the Falcons 8-of-16 (50 percent), a point differential of nine points for the game.
FALCONS SHOOT DOWN THE EAGLES IN HOME WIN
BGSU as a team shot 25-of-55 (45.5 percent) for the game, including knocking down 11-of-25 (44 percent) from behind the three-point line in a 74-58 home win over Eastern Michigan on Jan. 21. The Falcons, who had six different players make at least one three-ball for the game, hit 11 three-pointers overall to match its season-high. BGSU had four players in double figures in Anthony Henderson (17), Richaun Holmes (13), Delvin Dickerson (12) and Zack Denny (10).
