BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team was defeated by Western Michigan University, 194.800–194.000, Saturday (Feb. 28) evening inside of Anderson Arena.
Â
Senior Gina Locigno won her first event of the season, as she scored a 9.850 to claim the outright floor title. The 9.850 tied a season high for the senior. Freshman Jordan Rae tied for first on beam by registering a career-high 9.825. The first-place finish for Rae is the first in her career.
Â
With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 5-7 (1-4 MAC), while Western Michigan improves to 5-2 (3-2 MAC).
Â
"It was really an up and down roller coaster ride today," head coach Kerrie Turner said. "We had a great start on vault, strong start. And then bars is just still that event that we haven't seemed to be able to bring everything together there. But the girls fought through, and we talked about that after that rotation – we were still very much in it. On beam, our first athlete fell. And then the rest of them pulled it together, stayed on and did a good job. I was really proud of them for that. On floor, unfortunately, we had a few [injuries] and we had to throw some people in quickly. I think as a team, they need to learn from that. Everybody has to be ready at any minute, and I was expecting a lot more out of them to finish the meet."Â
Bowling Green won beam, 48.500–48.400, while also scoring a 48.500 on bars, 48.775 on vault and a 48.225 on floor. Junior Alyssa Nocella placed second in the all-around, highlighted by a third-place finish on floor (9.800) and a fourth-place finish on bars (9.775).
Â
Senior Amanda Lievendag had a strong competition for the Orange and Brown, earning a pair of top-three finishes in the only two events that she competed in. Lievendag finished second on bars by scoring a 9.825, and tied for third on vault – along with sophomore Victoria Heath and senior Jamilah Ali – by posting a 9.800. For Heath, the 9.800 was a career best. Heath has now notched a career high at eight of Bowling Green's nine competitions in 2015.
Â
Junior Katrina Carpenter – who placed tied for seventh on vault – also recorded a career high, as she scored a 9.700. Carpenter had earned a 9.650 four times this season, which stood as her top mark until today.
Â
To go along with Rae's first-place finish on beam, sophomore Lauren Feely scored a season-high 9.700 to finish tied for fourth – along with junior Caroline Ellingboe – on the apparatus. Ellingboe also scored a 9.650 on bars to finish 10th, slightly behind freshman Morgan Denlinger, who finished tied for seventh by posting a 9.700.
Â
Freshman McKenna Schoenberger finished fifth on floor with a 9.750, closely followed by Heath, who finished sixth by notching a 9.725.
Â
Bowling Green will head to Piscataway, New Jersey for a March 7 triangular with Rutgers and West Chester. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The Falcons will then conclude the regular season on Match 14 with a Senior Day dual meet with Kent State at 4 p.m.Â
