Lakewood Ranch, Florida – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team beat the Akron Zips 3-2 in the first round of match play on Monday, yet saw the second round delayed by lightning and then ultimately pushed back to Tuesday due to unplayable conditions at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge hosted by BGSU at the Royal Lakes Golf Course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Fla.
All eight teams played through a rainy first round in the morning session, before lightning eventually delayed the second round of play in the early afternoon. In the end, after a two-hour delay, the course was deemed too wet and unplayable, therefore pushing the second round back to Tuesday.
"I am so proud of the way our team fought today. The matches were incredibly tight. And it was extra special to see our seniors come through and pick up wins on the very last hole," commented head coach Stephanie Young. "It was a long day of competition and we have a big day tomorrow. Nine hole matches are not much time at all. We must come out strong and play our best because there are some very talented teams in our brackets ahead."
The Falcons' Shelby Wilson, Patricia Holt and Hannah Lewis all posted wins in their head-to-head bouts.
Starting on the back nine, Wilson took an early two-hole lead after hole number 12, only to see Akron's Frida Fougberg battle back to win three of the next six holes to take a one-hole lead onto the front nine of play. The BGSU senior then went on to win at holes number two and four to go back in front by one-hole over Fougberg.
After Akron's Fougberg put the match back at all square at number eight, Wilson won the match on hole number nine to give her the 1UP win.
At the number two spot, Holt stormed out to a two-hole lead with wins at both number 10 and 11. Following a loss at number 14, Holt took a one-hole lead into the front nine where Pader Her of Akron tied the match up with a win at hole number one.
Akron's Her took a one-hole lead with a win on hole number four, only to see Holt retie the match up two holes later at number six. Holt would win on holes number seven and nine to come away with the 1UP win over the Zips' Her.
The other BGSU win came from Lewis at the number three spot, as she posted a 1UP win over Alejandra Velasco of Akron. Lewis jumped out to a two-hole lead with back-to-back victories at holes 12 and 13, yet suffered back-to-back losses over the next two holes to see the match all square heading to the 17th tee.
Lewis again went two-holes up with wins at 17 and 18, only to see Velasco answer back with wins at holes number one and two to knot the back-and-forth match up once more with seven holes left to play.
The Bowling Green junior went on to win holes three and four before matching Velasco in four of the final five holes of the round to hold on for the 1UP win.
BGSU's Mikayla Baer suffered a 2UP loss to Laura Murray at the number three position, while fellow sophomore Fran Rodriguez was edged out 1UP by Sierra Everson.
Playing as an individual, Lily Bartell defeated Lesli Stolly of Akron in only 11 holes of play. Bartell won holes number one, four, five, six, eight and nine to go take a six-hole lead into the back nine. The junior then took the head-to-head win at both numbers 10 and 11 to win the match 8&7 over Stolly.
Eastern Michigan defeated Central Michigan 4-1 to advance to the semifinals round on Tuesday against Bowling Green.
On the other side of the bracket, Western Michigan edged IPFW 3-2 in the first round of play, while Northern Illinois downed Ohio 4-1.
The second round and third rounds of play will now be just nine holes each on Tuesday, rather than the standard 18 holes.
Play on Tuesday will start at 7:30 a.m. with teams teeing-off on both hole number one and number 10.
The third round of play will start immediately after the conclusion of the second round.
