Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's golf team will tee-off their 2015 spring season on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 9-10, at the Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club in Lakewood, Florida.
The two-day event, which will be hosted by BGSU, will be played on the Royal Lakes Golf Course and will consist of three rounds of match play.
This year's tournament field includes eight teams - Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, Akron, Western Michigan, IPFW, Northern Illinois and Ohio.
At last year's Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge, the Falcons defeated Northern Illinois 3-1-1 in the first round and then held off Bradley for a 3-2-0 win in the second round of play.
The Falcons then suffered a tough 3-2-0 loss to Toledo in the championship round of play to finish in second-place overall.
BGSU head coach Stephanie Young will send out an experienced lineup for the Falcons' first event of the spring season in seniors Shelby Wilson and Patricia Holt, sophomore Mikayla Baer, junior Hannah Lewis and sophomore Fran Rodriguez.
Wilson, who paced the Falcons this past fall with three top-10 finishes and a team-best stroke average of 77.36 over 11 rounds of play, will look to carry over her strong play from the fall into her final spring season as a Falcons. The Texas native went 1-2-0 last year at the season opening event, posting a first round 3 & 1 win over Sydney Brickey of NIU.
Holt, who like Wilson went 1-2-0 at last year's match play event with a first round win over Sam Coyne of NIU, will also look to build on a solid fall season that saw her card a stroke average of 78.45 over her 11 rounds of play and register three top-15 finishes, which included a seventh-place individual showing at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational.
Playing in her first Women's Mid-American Match Play Challenge event, BGSU's Baer started her 2014 fall season out with a second-place showing at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial Tournament in mid-September and then wrapped up her fall with a 20th-place finish at the Rocket Classic in mid-October. The sophomore will head into her second spring season of competition having played in 14 events during her time at BGSU and with much needed experience to compete at the match play event.
Returning to where she went 2-0-1 at last year's challenge with wins over Katarina Mangieri of Bradley in the second round and Stephanie St. Jean of Toledo in the championship round, Lewis is coming off a fall season that saw her shoot two career low rounds of 72 and post two top-25 finishes with a 13th-place showing at the Golden Grizzlies Invitational and a 22nd-place finish at the Cardinal Classic.
Like Baer, fellow classmate Rodriguez will also be making her debut at the match play event, as the sophomore had perhaps the biggest improvement from last year, her freshman year in 2013-14, to this season than any other Falcon on the team. After playing in only three events and shooting a low round 78 her freshman year, Rodriguez came out with a strong fall season this year with three-top 15 finishes over five tournaments. She placed third overall at the Jon P. Spiess Memorial on Sept. 14 and then followed up with another third-place finish at the Cardinal Classic the following week with rounds of 74 and 73 over the two-day event.
BGSU junior Lily Bartell will compete as an individual at the event. Bartell, who totaled two top-25 finishes, including a 12th-place finish at the Rocket Classic over the fall season, went 3-0-0 at last year's event with wins over Lena Gautier of NIU, Danielle Lemek of Bradley and Sathika Ruenreong of Toledo.
The first two rounds of play are set for Monday, Feb. 9, with round one slated for an 8:00 a.m. start and round two to follow immediately after at approximately 12:00 p.m. or thereabouts.
The third and final round of match play will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 10, beginning at 8:00 a.m.
