NDSU's Menke spins a two-hitter in nightcap
Host Indiana University used a three-run fourth inning to erase an early deficit Saturday afternoon (March 14), en route to a 5-2 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team. The game was BG's first of the day at the Hoosier Classic, held at IU's Andy Mohr Field.
In the nightcap, North Dakota State University's Krista Menke threw a complete-game two-hitter to lead the Bison to a 3-0 win over the Falcons.
Sophomore Aspen Searle was 3-for-5 at the plate in Saturday's two games. In three games in Bloomington (BGSU played the Hoosiers in a single game on Thursday), Searle has six hits in nine at-bats.
Junior Marina Cobbs and sophomore Trista Mokienko each were 2-for-3 in Saturday's IU game, while soph Haley Schrock, a native of Goshen, Ind., had a hit in each of the day's two games. She is 4-for-9 at the plate in the three games in Bloomington to date.
Sophomore Briana Combs made her second start of the season in the circle vs. NDSU, and allowed just two earned runs and six hits in a complete-game effort.
"Game one against Indiana was a tough loss," said BGSU head coach Shannon Salsburg. "We played solid defense and hit the ball hard once again. We need to continue to work on pushing runs across the board the entire game, and our pitching staff has to be better pitching when we are ahead of batters.
"In the North Dakota State game, Bri gave us a gutsy performance on the mound. She found ways to get outs against a very tough offense and our defense was solid behind her."
Searle and the Falcons broke on top of Indiana in the first inning of Saturday's first game. Searle led off the game with a single to centerfield, and after IU starting pitcher Lora Olson struck out the next two batters, Mokienko's single moved Searle to third, and Schrock's single plated the game's first run.
In the third inning, Searle again led off the inning with a base hit. Junior Molly Holliday moved her to second with a grounder, and Cobbs singled to center, but Searle was thrown out trying to score. Cobbs took second on the throw home, however, and she scored the game's second run when Mokienko followed with a base hit of her own.
Falcon senior Jamie Kertes threw three scoreless innings, allowing only an infield single in that time. That hit came with one out in the first, and Kertes then retired the next eight batters in a row.
In the fourth inning, however, a leadoff walk was followed by Erin Lehman's double. Shannon Cawley and Michelle Huber each had run-scoring singles, and the game was tied.
Junior Braiden Dillow replaced Kertes in the circle, and got three outs, but not before the Hoosiers took the lead. That go-ahead run came as Cawley advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a wild pitch. Schrock's outstanding catch of a drive to leftfield by Mena Fulton produced the second out of that inning.
BG got a pair of baserunners in the fifth inning, when junior Marisa Shook led off with a pinch-hit single, and Cobbs had a two-out single of her own. But, IU relief pitcher Miranda Tamayo and the Hoosiers got out of the inning when a BG runner was caught in a rundown between second and third.
The Hoosiers got a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Dillow got the first two outs of the inning, but allowed a Fulton single up the middle. Kertes returned to the circle, but the next batter, Kelsey Dotson, homered to leftfield on an 0-2 count to give the hosts a 5-2 lead. Kertes got out of the inning with a strikeout of Kayla Mathewson.
In the seventh, Tamayo worked a one-two-three inning to seal the win for the home team. Tamayo allowed just two hits in four innings of work, after the starter, Olson, gave up two runs and six hits in three innings.
Rebecca Blitz was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Hoosiers, while six of her teammates had one hit apiece. Both the Falcons and Hoosiers had eight hits in the game.
In the second game, Menke – who entered the weekend as the nation's leader in strikeouts (137 entering Saturday), struck out 16 Falcons in her two-hit shutout. The NDSU senior, who tossed a no-hitter against Purdue last week, walked two batters on Saturday to improve to 11-2 on the year.
Searle began the game with a single to left, marking the third-straight game in which she had led off with a base hit. Holliday's sacrifice bunt advanced her to second, but Menke then whiffed the next two batters.
The Bison took the lead in the second inning. Amanda Grable led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out grounder.
BG got pair of third-inning baserunners when senior Emily McClelland was hit by a Menke pitch with one out, and McClelland advanced to second when Searle drew a walk. But, Menke fanned the next two hitters to end the inning. She struck out eight batters in the first three innings, including six in a row at one point.
The bottom of the third saw the Bison extend the lead to 3-0. After Combs retired the first two hitters, Cheyenne Garcia singled and stole both second and third base. She came home on a base hit by Alyssa Reina, and Reina would wind up crossing the plate on Grable's single.
Those three runs were more than enough for Menke. BG's only baserunners over the last four innings came on Schrock's fourth-inning single and a sixth-inning walk by Mokienko.
Garcia and Grable led the Bison at the plate, each going 2-for-3. Grable and Reina each scored one run and drove in another.
BGSU is scheduled to conclude play in the Hoosier Classic on Sunday (March 15), facing IPFW at 10:00 a.m. and Wright State at 2:30 p.m.
