Rio Verde, Arizona – Bowling Green State University women's golf team wrapped up its three rounds of play at the 2015 Rio Verde Invitational with a final round team score of 311, +23, to finish in a tie for 10th-place overall over the 54-hole event held at the White Wing Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club in Rio Verde, Arizona.
Bowling Green posted rounds of 311, 296 and 311 to finish with a combined team score of 918, +54, over the 54-holes of play to place in a tie with Akron for 10th-place overall out of the 18-team field. The Falcons finished in front of Western Michigan, Xavier, Northern Illinois, Illinois State, Ball State, Bradley and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
"We came out pretty hot today, but just were not able to close it out for a team score that would move us up the board," stated head coach Stephanie Young. "The seniors had great individual performances, as they both posted all three of their rounds in the 70s, respectively, and helped lead the team in scoring. We are definitely disappointed with our overall finish, but the positive takeaways are many and the team knows what they need to work on going forward."
Senior Patricia Holt continued her improvement over the three-day event, as the senior posted a first round 79, +7, a second round 76, +4, and then a final round of 72, even par, on Sunday to finish in a tie for 19th-place overall. Holt, who carded a 54-hole score of 227, +11, for the three-day event, tallied eight birdies and 29 pars over the weekend.
Fellow senior Shelby Wilson finished in a tie for 23rd-place overall with her 54-hole score of 228, +12, one stroke behind Holt. Wilson, who totaled 12 pars on Sunday, sandwiched a second round 72, even par, in between two rounds of 78, +6, en route to her three-round combined score. She finished the event with three birdies and a team-high 37 pars.
Like Wilson, BGSU's Lily Bartell posted a low round over the second round of play on Saturday. The junior posted a second round score of 74, +2, in the middle of two rounds of 80, +8, to finish in a tie for 54th-place overall. Â Bartell turned in four birdies and 31 pars on her way to a three-round combined score of 234, +18.
Both Hannah Lewis and Fran Rodriguez each carded a final round of 81, +9, to finish in a tie for 71st-place overall with identical scores of 238, +22. Lewis registered rounds of 74, 83, and 81, which included two birdies and 34 pars. Rodriguez posted rounds of 83, 74 and 81, and finished with three birdies and 29 pars over her 54 holes of play.
"I don't think the layoff was ideal between Florida and this event, but that's the nature of the schedule," continued Young. "We competed very well in Florida and expected to do so here too."
Seton Hall won the event with a team score of 896, +32, while Toledo and Northern Arizona each finished in a tie for second-place overall with identical three-round combined team scores of 900, +36. Eastern Michigan (905, +41) and UMKC (907, +43) rounded out the top-five in the team standings.
The Falcons will return to competition in just over three weeks, as BGSU will take part in the EKU Colonel Classic hosted by Eastern Kentucky University on April 3-4 from the Arlington Golf & Country Club in Richmond, Ky.
